Stop the madness

It is already occurring, garden fans. Innocent crepe myrtle trees being “pruned.” More like being hacked. The excessive pruning practice of “topping,” or “Crepe Murder” as it is often called, usually begins in February. Well meaning homeowners and commercial property managers have their reasons for reducing the height of these summer bloomers. The tree is “too tall,” “not shaped,” or my favorite “it promotes flowering.” This crime against arboriculture has to stop! The crepe myrtle, Lagerstroemia indica, is native to China and Korea, but has been grown successfully in America since the late 18th century. They are a favorite of…

Bermuda news: January 2017,  filling in the dots The state of Bermuda District By Dorothy Jaeckle, Bermuda Supervisor Chairwoman Happy New Year to all our citizens! It is hard to believe it has been over a year since we rang in 2016. A lot has happened in Chesterfield in the past year. We brought on the two new faces of Dr. Joseph Casey as the County Administrator and Dr. James Lane as the School Superintendent, and the Board of Supervisors is looking forward to a successful 2017. The three top roles of local government are public safety, education, and public…

Our future is in our children’s hands and those who teach them The state of Bermuda schools By Carrie Coyner, Bermuda District School Board Member Do you ever drive through our Bermuda District community just to see your neighbors? Not the neighbors who live three blocks over, but the vast array of neighbors who make up this amazing melting pot called Chester. You should if you don’t, and pay particular attention to our schools while you do. When I drive by our schools, I wonder if we have provided everything students need to be the next county administrator, the doctor…

Cancer

Cancer is a terrible disease that has affected far too many. My hope and prayer is that the word cancer will be removed from our vocabulary once the disease has been eradicated and a cure found. I have seen cancer’s effect on many, but the most alarming statistics are in the fire service. I have walked with some who have had good results with treatment, surgery or both, but I have also walked with others that this dreaded disease took their lives. A friend and former battalion chief I served has been in this fight for some time. Today, I…

We don’t grow when things are easy; we grow when we face challenges. The L.C. Bird boys’ basketball program is no stranger to a challenge but the remarkable thing is the Skyhawks success amid those challenges. In 2011 and 2016, L.C. Bird knocked on the door with state final appearances. While the Skyhawks came up short, a deep and talented roster has a common goal in 2017. “Our goal is to win our last game,” said L.C. Bird coach Troy Manns. Bird is armed with at least six players – Jaylen Dillard, Mario Haskett, Cam Henry, Jyles Webster, Johquin “Pinky”…
