Thomas Dale Boys By Jamal Davis Last season the boys’ basketball team at Thomas Dale finished with a 9-13 record. While that may not be where it wanted to be, it was an improvement over the year before. The Knights hope to continue to improve this season under head coach Braxton Byerson, a former standout athlete at Thomas Dale himself. Unfortunately, the Knights will be forced to do so without the help of their best player from a season ago, point guard Elijah Gregory. Even without Gregory, Byerson believes his squad is well equipped to fill the void. Projected Starting Five: G James…

By Jessica Nolte and Megan Schiffres Capital News Service RICHMOND – Gov. Terry McAuliffe spoke Thursday in support of legislation proposed by members of the Women’s Health Care Caucus and vowed to veto bills he believes would endanger women’s reproductive rights. McAuliffe said legislators should learn from controversies in North Carolina following the passage of what he called “socially divisive bills.” McAuliffe said he told the General Assembly not to send him these types of bills because they have no chance of becoming law. “I have sent a strong message already. They have an abortion bill, a 20-week abortion bill,…

Life of a “suitcase child”

0

By Roy Mastro and Stella Edwards What is a “suitcase child?” He or she can be defined as a child that is a victim of their parent’s divorce/custody proceedings in our judicial system. Such children keep their suitcase packed because they are being ordered by the legal system to frequently travel from one parent’s home to the other parent’s home, sometimes forty to fifty miles away or even a greater distance. They give up time spent in childhood activities with their friends in the neighborhood or from their school. Eventually, they feel like outsiders among their friends. Many of these children…

Three possibilities

0

A fire in a single-family dwelling recently occurred in a neighboring jurisdiction. The tragedy was that this fire claimed the lives of two and caused two to have to jump from a second floor window. My thoughts and prayers go out to this family as they deal with this unspeakable loss. As raw as this incident may be, we must talk about this in an attempt to educate. I do not remember if the news reported working smoke alarms, but I am going to present three possibilities, based upon years of experience. The first possibility is that there were no…

Mid-season hoops reports

By Zack Long Team MVP: Terrence Whitfield Record: 7-5 Coach Michael Knight says his team started off the season “slow” on the defensive side, but with seven wins, that has now changed. The Warriors are playing harder and with a higher energy level. Terrence Whitfield, a senior and three-year starter on varsity, has done everything and then some for Matoaca. Not only does he lead the team in scoring and rebounding, but he also dropped 33 points in a big win over rival Thomas Dale. Senior guard Tyreek Carter has also been a key player for Matoaca, as he is…

The 6-0 forward has averaged 9.2 points per game (2nd on team) and 6.4 rebounds (1st on team) and has helped Longwood to three wins in what has been a tough season for the Lancers. In an 88-77 victory over Delaware State on December 28, Gilliamhit 8 of 9 shots en route to an…
