School reopening options explored
0During a June 23 work session, Chesterfield County Public Schools board members heard about six options for reopening schools on Sept. 8 and 9. The first option – a normal five-day week – can’t be accomplished, deputy superintendent Thomas Taylor said at the virtual meeting. Option 6 involves all-virtual, or online, learning. Even if the school board selects another option – the rest of which involve in-school instruction one to three days a week – parents could still decide for their student to learn online, superintendent Merv Daugherty said. Although the board typically does not have a meeting in July,…

Act of Kindness
0To the Editor: Two months or more ago, I lost the car keys. “They’re bound to be here,” I thought. “Because I drove home in the car,” they’ll surely show up soon. However, after constant searching of the car, pockets, house, and garage, the keys were never discovered. Finally, I was convinced I’d never see those keys again, so I planned to go out on last Monday to have a new one made. Sunday night, the phone rang, but I didn’t answer since it, showed no recognizable name. However, after four rings, a cheerful voice said, “I’m Tim at Panera…
Bird coach released after ethnically charged remarks
0L.C. Bird volunteer assistant coach Jimmie Rogers is no longer with the program after remarks on social media that included ethnically insensitive comments. In response to a Facebook post that gave reasons why it would be difficult to celebrate the fourth of July, Rogers replied with the comment: “Drink a gallon of Covid-19 and go back to where you came from,” Rogers said in a comment. “[Where you come from] the main mode of transportation is a donkey and you p… outside of your front door home with dirt floors.” Since the comments were made, it appears as if Rogers’s…

Adding fuel to the fire
0You have probably heard someone say, “you are adding fuel to the fire.” This is a metaphor for when the words that we say or write ramp up an already heated conversation. This is not the fuel that I will be writing about in this article, but the literal gasoline that many add to a fire though they should not. Gasoline is a flammable liquid with a low flash point and a low ignition temperature. In other words, it takes very little heat to get gasoline to burn. There are many people, including off-duty firefighters, who have been burned badly…
