The three H’s

0

The weather that we are so famous for in central Virginia, has arrived. Hot, hazy & humid are the three normal H’s, during our summers. With these H’s comes the three important H’s of protecting yourself in and from the heat, hydrate, hydrate, and hydrate! Water is the best hydrating agent, unless you are overcome by the heat, which will then require fluid with electrolytes. Hydration is something that must be done prior to, during, and after an event in the heat. If you are not well hydrated prior to going out into the heat chances are great that you…

Gridiron, b-ball locals pick up college offers

0

Two football standouts and a budding basketball star added offers to play their respective sports at the college level. For two athletes, these scholarship offers are their first. Ladies first. Lauryn George, a guard at Matoaca picked up two Division I offers this past week from Bethune-Cookman and the University of Buffalo. On a senior-laden team that won 20 games last season, George earned some minutes off the bench. She scored 12 points in a December 12, 2019, victory over Meadowbrook. “With her potential, the sky’s the limit,” said Matoaca coach Glenna Lewis. “She rotated really easily into the line…

Matoaca grad Richards named SoCon Athlete of the Year

0

VMI redshirt senior wrestler Neal Richards was named the 2019-20 Bob Waters Southern Conference Male Athlete of the Year Wednesday. Richards becomes just the second VMI student-athlete to be named the SoCon Male Athlete of the Year, the other being Johnny Mapp in 1953-54. Richards also is only the second wrestler to earn the award, joining Appalachian State’s Austin Trotman, who took the distinction in 2011-12. “Neal will go down as one of the greatest to step on the mat for VMI,” said wrestling head Keydet coach Jim Gibson. “He has embodied everything that it means to be a cadet-athlete.…

These Eyes

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. As Spring spreads into Summer, it also brings along the allergy season. All three of my kids suffer from some kind of allergy, but as for me, I do not have allergies. Despite being tested and found negative, I still have some symptoms. This is due primarily to the fact that I live in the country, and I am surrounded by farmland. When the farmers start plowing and spraying, all of the stuff in the air causes me to have some slight nasal drip and an occasional irritating nagging…

Mixed-use development lands near Courthouse

0

By a vote of 4-1 with Jim Ingle dissenting, the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors approved a rezoning for the Courthouse Landing mixed-use project last week. The June 24 meeting was the first one in months since the COVID-19 virus hit that allowed residents to speak in person during public comment. A number availed themselves of the opportunity. “This is an extremely solid project,” Dale District resident David Harris said. “It could fund schools and teacher raises” and add restaurants. “We need more jobs and tax money. We [have to] keep our teachers from leaving.” Mike Uzel said that, although…

MedFlight takes to sky with new copters

0

It started out as an average day on March 27, at the Virginia State Police EMS MedFlight I base at Chesterfield County Airport. Pilots, flight nurses, and paramedics went around performing their duties waiting for a call for help that would spring them into action for a rescue mission. They didn’t have to wait long. The dispatch order came: a 3-year-old was missing in Caroline County, and time was running out. Every second counted as the team assembled. The helicopter which silently rested on a wheeled platform seemingly came to life as it was rolled out of the bay, and…
