Dogpound Mechanics

0

Hello, and welcome to the wonderful world of the Dogpound.  I will admit up front that I am not mechanically inclined.   I was more of a nerdy kid but I did do some simple work on my car…changing the spark plugs, oil, or air filter…sometimes venturing into working on the alternator, battery, or radiator, but nothing complicated like brakes or the carburetor.  One of the main reasons was that I was afraid I would get into something like that and not be able to get it back together, leaving me stranded since that was my only means of transportation.  Although…

Minnie Susie Elliott circles the sun for the 107th time

0

One would have to consider it a special gift when a family can celebrate five generations. Minnie Susie Elliott had nine children.  Between them (five are surviving), there are 27 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great -grandchildren. That is a houseful when they all come together. This Saturday, July 30, this family tree will come together at Tyler’s Retreat, Elliott’s home for the last six years, for a very special celebration for Minnie Susie Elliott, when she celebrates her 107th birthday. She was born August 1, 1909. Village News visited Elliott when she turned 100. She had said she never…

Sidewalk to be extended along Old Centralia Road

0

Chesterfield is buying into the idea of pedestrian access for citizens across the county. Old Centralia Road is slated for a sidewalk from Castlebury Drive to Glen Oaks Court. Sidewalks have already been constructed on Cogbill, Osborne, and Harrowgate roads. Old Centralia and Osborne roads have had partial sidewalks for years, but they end abruptly; some calling them sidewalks to nowhere. But a movement inspired by safety, health issues, and connectivity is driving the need for more pedestrian amenities. The Old Centralia Road sidewalk when completed will be about a half mile. The Chesterfield Department of Transportation (CDOT) has procured…

County seeks residents’ input budget expenditures

0

Have you said, “I can’t believe what they’re doing up there,” referring to how Chesterfield County is spending tax dollars? This year’s county budget and the budgets extending out for five years could be just a little different in how it is constructed. The Chesterfield Budget and Management Department is now in the process of gathering information from citizens on what they think are the best ways to spend tax dollars, both for county administration and schools. “Both boards (supervisors and school board members) have come together to see what the community wants and doesn’t want,” said Matt Harris, assistant…

Board chooses prototype design for elementary schools

0

The Chesterfield County School Board on July 12 adopted a prototype design for the four elementary schools that will be built in the next 32 months. Using the same design for multiple schools will save money and time as Chesterfield County Public Schools moves forward to build a new elementary school (Creekside) in the Midlothian District and build replacements for Beulah, Enon, and Matoaca elementary schools. The construction is part of the bond package approved by Chesterfield County voters in 2013. Nine companies submitted design proposals, and RRMM Architects won the contract with a one-story design of almost 85,000 square…

Little building on the Green

0

In 1998, the Chester Village Green project was underway. Initial streets were complete and building construction was started.  Jim Daniels, one of the developers of the project, had acquired the sales office for Sunset Memorial Park.  The building was salvaged from the property where Chester Post Office construction was beginning. The upper deck of the building made the trip with no problems along the route.  The windows, front door and columns were also salvaged. Today, the building houses the Village News and the Chesterfield Center for the Arts Foundation.

Baby it’s hot outside, but it’s good for you

By M.A Fuller Those barefoot, tree-hugging hippies were actually onto something. And it was definitely the grass that kept them so carefree. Don’t panic, I didn’t mean “grass.” Check out the following ways the great outdoors can do more for you than an aspirin, sleeping pills, or a six-pack. Grounding Electrically speaking, humans are positively charged and the earth is negatively charged. There is a vital energy exchange that takes place called “grounding” where your feet absorb large amounts of electrons that restore your body to its most natural electrical state and is a powerful antioxidant. The effects are pain…
