Remember When… Penny Poker at Wrexham

0

The jug was phony but the game was real. This weekly penny ante poker game in the kitchen at Wrexham. called Wrexham Hall, was located at Old Centralia and Iron Bridge roads, before Chesterfield Meadows was built and it was moved to Old Wrexham Road. Among these three old friends, the weekly penny ante poker game took place during most of the 1950’s. Mother’s Day

0

To the Editor: On Mother’s Day, May 8, many of us celebrated the powerful bond between mother and child. Tragically, the world-wide symbols of motherhood – dairy cows – never get to see or nurture their babies. Newborn calves are torn from their mothers at birth, so we can seize and drink the milk that mother cows produce for them. The powerless, distraught mothers bellow for days, hoping in vain for their babies’ return. The babies are kept alive elsewhere, to soon become veal cutlets. Dairy cows spend their lives on a concrete floor, chained, with no outdoor access. To…

Mother-Son Dance

To the Editor: They came in poodle skirts and fancy gowns and casual duds straight out of Grease. It was the first annual ‘50s Mother/Son dance at C.C. Wells. Moms who had probably worked all day dressed up to the nines for the shindig. And the boys, some sporting suits and ties, some in leather jackets with slicked back hair were so proud of their dates. I arrived a little early and took up a spot at a window looking out to the parking lot. I saw a lot of young men opening doors for Mom and offering an arm…

The contractor has re-organized his proposed schedule such that Magnolia Grange will be without air conditioning for the shortest time possible. The HVAC system is a needed repair so bear with Chesterfield County and be patient as the repairs are being made. You may be called upon to help secure any artifacts removed out of harm’s way. If you can assist the docents, please call the office at…

Know Your Landscape Compass

0

Do you think about your landscape around your house like a compass? The sun rises in the eastern part of your property, passes through the southern part and settles on the western part of your property. The rising and setting points will change slightly each day and will only be at due east and due west two days each year, the spring and fall equinoxes. Using the compass theory helps gardeners to avoid the common problem of the wrong plant in the wrong place. For plants that require part sun, consider planting them where the morning or eastern sun exposure…

It is all about seniors at TRIAD event

Dark clouds and drizzle did not damper the spirits of hundreds of seniors last week who braved the elements to attend Chesterfield’s Annual TRIAD Senior’s Day. Motorist Assistance Gilbert Lewis provided traffic control and answered questions at his post adjacent to the church driveway and parking lot, he is already seasoned on helping others. “I’ve been with Motorist Assistance for three years plus now,” Lewis explained, a smile beaming from his friendly face. “I wanted to be an Auxiliary Patrol Officer but couldn’t because of my age. That’s okay, this is the next best thing and as close to being…
