Matoaca Talent Show

The Matoaca Fine and Performing Arts department hosted a Faculty and Alumni talent show on Feb. 18.  Faculty acts included Mrs. Lasmith and Mrs. Hudson who sang the duet “Count on Me” and Mr. John White who presented a great ventriloquist act. Mr. Britt played an amazing gospel piano solo. Alumni acts included Katelyn McCarter (2007) Beth Hoover (2010), Derek Kelly (2012), Tyler Thrasher, Andre Mollineau and Jaylin Brown (2013), Miles Hicks and Kaetwan Crenshaw (2014). Miles and Kaetwan are also the choreographers for the award winning Matoaca girls show choir Up Front.

Celebrate Red Cross Month by giving blood in March

During Red Cross Month in March, the American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to join in its lifesaving mission by giving blood. Clarke House finds new footing next door

The Clarke House, built in the 1920s, was at one time before the Chesterfield County Preservation Committee and was about to be put on the chopping block. County Commissioner Dale Patton came to the rescue, buying the dilapidated old place. The copper and fireplaces had been stolen and Patton virtually rebuilt the house losing a heat pump to thieves in the process. Chesterfield’s Proffers System Under Fire at GA

The Virginia legislature is moving forward with “proffers” reform. Chesterfield County has used the proffers system to fund infrastructure due to its impact on growth. The legislature’s language indicates proffers cannot be “unreasonable” which means it is open for interpretation. Proffers are a major piece of Chesterfield’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP) with $3.94 million in revenue coming from proffers in FY16. Localities typically use proffers as a means to control growth. Proffers in Chesterfield, although only implied, starts at $18,966 and decreases from there with various contingencies agreed on between developers and zoning officials. LENNIE WAYNE POND Lennie Pond had been a fixture in Chester for as many years as he was old. A Chester resident who grew up in Ettrick, died Feb. 10, 2016 of complications from cancer at VCU Medical Center in Richmond. He was 75. Lennie always loved to go fast and would race anything that had wheels on it. He was a five-time late model Sportsman State Champion. Riverfront Park Boon for County Residents

The 108-acre site at the confluence of the Falling Creek and the James River is on its way to becoming a park for Chesterfield County. Trust for Public Land recently purchased the property from UB Properties Inc, a subsidiary of Union Bank & Trust and will transfer the land to Chesterfield County. According to Capital Region Land Conservancy(CRLC), their “first conversations” about the future disposition of the Riverwalk property was in January 2012.
