Super Dogpound

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. The Super Bowl is over and I am very happy about the outcome. I am a big Manning fan and I hope he takes this opportunity to retire while he is at the top of the mountain. He has nothing else left to prove; he can now go off to being a coach or a TV analyst like Terry Bradshaw. Anyway, not all went well during the Super Bowl game. I was at a Super Bowl party, sort of, the other couple that was to come got delayed by…

Panel Kills Mandatory Bicycle Helmet Bill

0

By Rachel Beatrice – Capital News Service Bicycling advocates are happy that legislators have killed a bill requiring all bicyclists under 18 to wear helmets in Virginia. Helmets can keep riders safe, but mandatory helmet laws are counterproductive, according to the Virginia Bicycling Federation. “While the Virginia Bicycling Federation encourages helmet use,” said Champe Burnley, president of the organization, “we believe that mandatory helmet laws discourage people from riding bikes, make basic transportation less accessible and as a matter of public policy, do not significantly increase bike safety.” Last week, the House Transportation Committee tabled House Bill 1360, which sought to…

Dutch Gap Canal

0

Construction of the Dutch Gap Canal began in August, 1864. The majority of the work to remove 67,000 tons of dirt was done by African-American troops under the Union Brig. Gen D. S. Ludlow. Due to naval battles at Trent’s Reach and the regular artillery shelling by Confederate troops, the canal’s completion was delayed until after the end of the Civil War. The picture above was taken in April 1865 near the bluff of Henricus Historical Park. In 1930s the Army Corp of Engineers widened Dutch Gap to its current width. Now, it is a shipping lane for cargo ship…
