Red Cross encourages blood donations

0

The American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to give blood to help ensure a sufficient blood supply throughout the holiday season. A Blood Drive will take place November 21 at 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Chester YMCA at 3011 W. Hundred Road. A seasonal decline in donations often occurs from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day when donors get busy with family gatherings and travel. However, patients do not get a holiday vacation from needing lifesaving transfusions. In fact, every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood.

A monument to God that stands proudly on a hill off Centralia Road is now considered an historic landmark. A Virginia Historical Highway Marker was dedicated last Saturday with most of the First Baptist Church (Centralia) congregation on hand to celebrate its unveiling. After growing their congregation, in the early 20th century, what had become known as Salem African Baptist…

Engine to Truck (No.4)

So after 19 years on C-shift and most of that on an engine company, I was transferred to the Fire & Life Safety Division. My new roles would be titled Community Programs Coordinator and Public Information Officer. In other words, I would now spend the next two years leading the public education section of Fire & Life Safety, and spend a great deal of time working with news agencies in our area. Can you say culture shock? One of our first assignments when I arrived was to revamp the Juvenile Firesetter process for our organization. The first order of business…
