Hard work and camaraderie pays off for the Skyhawks

L.C. Bird field hockey coach Veronica Zuccarello moved here from New Jersey on a Friday. On Monday, she met her team. Both coach and team have had a season to remember, as the Skyhawks are headed to regionals for the first time since 2004. “The season has been awesome for them,” Zuccarello said. “But it’s been more awesome for me, they just don’t know that.” Zuccarello calls the team her “best friends.” After all, they were among the first people she met in addition to the people she spent the most time with. “They are a huge part of my…

Speed, Grit and Diligence

Kobe Bryant once said in a press conference – “Everything negative- pressure, challenges – is all an opportunity for me to rise.” For this year’s version of the Meadowbrook football team and its senior running back, Jace Miller, that statement holds a lot of weight. The Miller family is an athletic one. Jace’s older brother, Justin, starred for Meadowbrook in 2014 and is a redshirt freshman at Virginia Union. Their sister, Jazmine, was a standout track athlete for the Monarchs. Athletic challenges pale in comparison to the biggest challenge they have faced – one that through tragedy has brought them…

In Chester, Skyhawks soar, but apparently they can also run. Both the the boys and girls cross-country teams brought home Conference 12 Championships this past week. “The team has been really dedicated to showing improvement,” said coach Adam Canning. “We had several runners shave their times significantly.” The biggest surprise for the Skyhawks has been junior Tyler McNulty, who took home the conference championship in just his third competitive race. “Sometimes you get lucky and get a natural runner,” Canning said. Kenny Sullivan, a junior, has really shown significant improvement this season. Sullivan was running in the low 19:00s last…

Biggest ever Old Dominion Postcard Club show

2

During the early 1900s until the mid-1960s, postcards were the way people kept in touch with friends and family.  Many have compared antique postcards to our present-day emails.  Cards feature street scenes, views of long-gone buildings, beautiful artwork on holiday and greeting cards, as well as almost any other conceivable topic. On November 13 and 14 at John Tyler Community College, this year’s 38th Annual Old Dominion Postcard Club Show will be the largest ever.  Everyone is invited to attend this event, one of the biggest Postcard Shows on the East Coast. According to show chairman, Tim O’Gorman, it is also one of…

Dogpound Confusion

Hello and welcome to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. One of the things I like about this part of the year is college football. As I have stated in past articles, I was born and raised in Ohio – the middle of high school and college football country, and of course the home of the Buckeye Nation. With that being said I try to watch the Buckeyes play whenever I can, and I also root for the other Big Ten teams when they are playing teams from another division. On occasion I catch a major match-up within the Big…

Many in Richmond Lack Health Insurance, Data Show

By Maureen McNabb Health insurance can be expensive, but the cost of not having it can be crippling. Local chef Jon Wise learned this the hard way when he was sent a bill for more than $62,000 after having his appendix removed last month. “I was enraged. I had two choices: die or have surgery,” Wise said. “So I chose surgery.” Wise is one of many Richmonders without health insurance. Almost one in five Richmond residents lacks health insurance – the highest uninsured rate among the more populous localities in Virginia, according to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau.…
