A Former TDHS Graduate Speaking Malaysian
0Wyatt Gordon, a 2008 graduate of Thomas Dale High School, was recently in Malaysia for two weeks competing in the World Cup of Malay Language Speech. After living in Indonesia for about a year and a half through the Critical Language and Boren scholarships, he felt comfortable with the Indonesian language. This was the first time he would speak Malaysian on such a public platform. Wyatt is currently a fellow with the East-West Center and studying for a master’s degree in Urban Planning at the University of Hawaii. He was excited to learn that he had been selected to be…
Healthy Start to School
0In just a matter of days the children in our area will be returning back to school. When the kids get back in school, so do many of the common contagious germs. Staying healthy during the school year requires a combination of both common sense and medical science. Parents, schools, health departments, and medical offices gear up this time of year to help prevent children from getting sick. Among the most effective first lines of defense against unwanted illness are vaccinations. Mandatory vaccinations prior to entering school have greatly decreased the incidence of some of the most common and, at…
Almost time to start or reseed your lawn
0With the arrival of Labor Day and kids returning to school, it is time to get serious about fall lawn renovation. This has not been a typical summer for some of us. My mower, for example has not collected dust in the shed as in summers past. However, cool season grass such as fescue, which is the dominant turf in our area, has requirements to maintain its vigor. Below are five steps to fabulous fescue: Have your soil tested. See my July 22, 2015 column for more details. You can view it at www.villagenewsonline.com/category/commentary/lifes-a-garden. Hear the Beep
0This year’s fire prevention week theme is “Hear the beep where you sleep.” Fire incident reporting shows that the large majority of civilian fire injuries and deaths occur between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., while most people are sleeping. You have read where I have stated that your house must have an adequate number of smoke alarms, but another vital aspect of that protection is for them to be properly placed in your home. The minimum was to have a smoke alarm on every level of the home, including the basement. However, due to further studies, it has become part…

Water Fit
0Imagine that you need some exercise but find the weight room at the gym, with the buff ladies and the hulking men, intimidating. Sometimes, it is just the need to be healthy and know that one is taking care of “body business.” Many find water aerobics is an answer that helps them take care of business. Water is kind to the joints and helps participants build a strong core and is an exercise many find easy to do. The Water Aerobics group at the Chester YMCA has a team of professionals that have dedicated their time and energy to years…
