New glasses bring smiles

0

Seeing the smiles and hearing their voices ring out “I can see, I can see better” was a very big deal for Wayne Castleberry, committee chairman for local Rotary club’s project “We Can See Clearly Now.” Castleberry, along with members from Conexus Vision, the nation’s non-profit consumer advocacy group for all issues related to healthy vision, witnessed the smiles and voices of 20 students from Elizabeth Scott Elementary School Thursday as they received their prescription glasses. Through the Rotarys project, Conexus screened 3,585 students in Chesterfield’s Title I elementary schools. From the initial screening, they provided 263 professional eye exams…

MBK’s Jeter, Giles commit

Meadowbrook is used to putting players in college; Monarchs are littered all over the state at all levels, from junior colleges to Division I. There’s even one in the NFL: Morgan Moses of the Washington Redskins. Two more will join the college ranks: Dre Giles, a defensive and offensive lineman, committed to Campbell of the Big South and Jordan Jeter, a wide receiver, will take his talents to UVA-Wise. Both committed after visits this past weekend. Meadowbrook coach Adam Tiller weighed in on both of his recent pledges. “Campbell is just the right fit for Dre,” said Tiller. “Great academics…

Jones nets 1000th career point

By Noah Christian Monique Jones just keeps getting better. The natural talent has always been there, as she played varsity as a freshman, but she continues to build on that talent. The Thomas Dale senior has improved her averages every year. Jones built on her freshman averages of 11.1 points and 4.5 rebounds, putting up 14.7 points and 5.6 rebounds in her sophomore year and 16.1 points and 5.7 rebounds in her junior year. She has led the Knights in scoring for the past two seasons. In fall workouts of her senior season, Jones suffered a serious ankle injury that…

Chester intersection of Bright Hope and Richmond Petersburg railways

0

Chester’s original “downtown” was a stop which was an intersection of the Richmond and Petersburg Railroad, running north to south, and the Clover Hill Railroad, which became the Bright Hope Railway, then the Farmville and Powhatan Railroad. In 1900, when the Richmond and Petersburg merged with the Atlantic Coast Line, that new railroad intersected the same east west railroad which became the Tidewater and Western Railroad in 1905. The Chester Station, which was located at Curtis Street and the CSX Railroad tracks, was the scene of a battle during the American Civil War. The Seaboard Air Line also passed through…

Dogpound Taxes

0

Hello and welcome to the start of tax time at the Dogpound. Yes, I know it is still months away but I am an eager beaver when it comes to taxes. It is like a dagger hanging over my head held by a thin piece of thread. The best way to get rid of that image is to get my stuff organized ahead of time, and when that last financial form arrives in the mail, I am off to the post office to let my CPA handle all the forms and calculations. I could probably do it myself…maybe…but I decided…

Adult education strong in Chesterfield

0

There is a little-known gem in Chesterfield County Public School’s education system and it comes in the form of its Adult Continuing Education program. After working as a GED teacher for three years, Dawn Wells, the Adult Education Program Manager, came into this role five years ago. She said she enjoys working with adults. “After a couple years of teaching … I [became] a coordinator of testing,” Wells said. “[I] decided to leave teaching and pursue this full time, so I became a full-time GED coordinator overseeing the classes and the testing, and then slowly moved up when the administrator…

Juguetazo brightens the day for over 2,000 children

Eyes were sparkling and grins were wide on the 2,000 children who gathered for El Juguetazo, a celebration of the Epiphany held Jan. 14, at L.C. Bird High School. “A snowstorm caused a delay for the annual event, originally scheduled for Jan. 7,” said Juan Santacoloma, Multicultural Liaison for Chesterfield County. The event provides at least one new toy for each child in a low-income family. In the Bible, the Three Kings Gaspar, Melchior and Balthazar, visited the baby Jesus bearing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Volunteers representing the Three Kings give gifts to the children. For many in…
