The gall of growing older

0

Growing older can be rewarding and also depressing. As we grow, we experience so much joy watching our children grow, seeing friends and family succeed, and enjoying the world as it goes through each glorious season. On the flip side, we start to experience more aches and pains, gray hair and wrinkles, and health issues. I have just experienced my first “health” problem and it was eye opening and terrible at the same time. Last fall I started noticing that I just didn’t feel like myself. I was having stomach pain and nausea after eating and was just not feeling…

By M.A. Fuller, Reiki Practitioner & Stress Management Coach Do you find yourself often using the excuse “I don’t have time” for things like exercising, planning your meals, or tracking calories? In a recent Facebook survey, I asked participants a series of questions including why they are not currently managing their stress. The number one reason was, you guessed it: “no time.” Giving yourself relief from stress does not have to become another stressor because you don’t know where to work it into your day. Here are five beautifully simple things you can do in less than five minutes a…

The Chesterfield County/Colonial Heights Crime Solvers program needs your help to identify and locate a bank robbery suspect. On Wednesday, July 27, at approximately 3 p.m., a female approached a teller in the Virginia Commonwealth Bank branch at 3209 Boulevard in Colonial Heights. She gave the teller a note demanding money, and upon receiving the money she left the bank on foot in an unknown direction. Then on Thursday, Aug. 4, just prior to 4 p.m., the same female handed a robbery note to a teller in the Bank of McKenney at 200 Johnson Creek Drive in Chesterfield County. After…

Building Construction

0

Most of the articles that I write are for the benefit of the readers, but every once in a while, I write to the men and women that put on a firefighter’s uniform and report to duty at their respective station. Firefighters are required to know a great deal about building construction and the effects that fire can have on a particular building. A common type of construction, in my day, was ordinary construction. This construction type is defined as masonry or brick walls, with a wood floor and roof. In fact, my house is built this way. Early on…

The communities of Enon Elementary and Beulah Elementary are gathering to help decide how their new school buildings will look. Community members will see the school design, review options for how the exterior of their school might look, and vote on the facade they prefer during these meetings: The Enon Elementary meeting will take place 6:30-8 p.m., Aug. 15 in the school’s library, 2001 E. Hundred Road. An additional topic at this meeting will be the re-evaluation of the location selected as the site of the new Enon Elementary. Previously, the new school was to be built on a different…

Incoming freshman already wowing scouts

Before he’s even stepped on a high school football field, his name is already known. If one hasn’t heard, here’s your chance. Chris Tyree. More importantly, college recruiters have already learned his name. As a result, the rising freshman at Thomas Dale picked up his second offer this past week, and it was a big one from the Atlantic Coast Conference: Virginia Tech. “Chris has a tremendous talent and a work ethic that is unheard of for such a young athlete,” said Thomas Dale coach Kevin Tucker. “He puts in a ton of time perfecting his craft and making sure…
