After a long journey, Kenny Williams III made his college choice for the second time, choosing the University of North Carolina. Williams will play his college basketball there under famed head coach Roy Williams in the basketball crazed town of Chapel Hill, N.C.

The announcement came Saturday via his Twitter account. The tweet was retweeted over 2,600 times with floods of excited Tar Heels fans welcoming him to the North Carolina family. The L.C. Bird standout originally signed to VCU, but after head coach Shaka Smart accepted a position at Texas, Williams asked for his release.

The decision per many sources came down to UVa and UNC, with false reports popping up that the senior had committed to Virginia, which he refuted to Village News staff writer Jack Herron. Florida was also a late candidate, but with head coach Billy Donovan taking the head coaching post with the Oklahoma City Thunder of NBA, they lost out.

Williams led the Skyhawks in every major offensive category besides assists (he was second). The L.C. Bird swingman averaged about 18 points, six rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block per game. Williams is the most highly touted L.C. Bird player to graduate and commit to play Division I basketball since Tyrese Rice, who attended Boston College before playing professionally overseas. Robert Johnson transferred from L.C. Bird to Benedictine during his high school career and is currently at Indiana University.

In Shaka Smart’s scheme, it was said that Williams would be a Troy Daniels-type player and be a three-point shooter. North Carolina would welcome the presence of a dominant shooter, as they only made 81 triples last season, tied for last in the Atlantic Coast Conference with Georgia Tech. It would seem that Williams is going to fit right in.
