To the Editor:
The “center” (turning lane) of Route 10/West Hundred Road has been narrowed quite a bit, as well as the other four traffic lanes to make room for two bicycles lanes. To make room for bicycles, they should have bought up more right-of-way.
Driving west, I make a left turn on to Petersburg Street. I can just barely get my car into this turning lane.
With real heavy traffic, cars and trucks are passing me in both west and east lanes, barely missing me by inches. There I sit, in “dead water” with “white knuckles,” waiting to be killed. Depending on the time of day, I have started going on down to the traffic light at Sibley’s BBQ and turn left on to Winfree Street and down to Gill Street.
This is a bad and dangerous situation. We should use caution. I have yet to see a bicycle on Route 10. I did see a little girl [riding her bike,]she was on the sidewalk and I don’t blame her. The schools are open – we must really watch ourselves on Route 10-West Hundred Road near our three schools.
A long time ago many people wanted Route 10 to go around Chester. The powers that be, who are no longer with us, did not see it that way. Back then Chester was a quaint, cute, little village that everyone was proud of. Today, thanks to the powers that be, we are just another wide place in the road, but not wide enough.
