Innovators. Researchers. Transformers. Influencers. Makers. These are just a few of the words describing those who work in the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and health.

These areas encompass a wide variety of in-demand career options that provide good pay and benefits, as well as professional growth, but there often aren’t enough qualified applicants to fill local jobs.

The community is invited to explore training and career opportunities in these fields at John Tyler Community College’s Modern Makers Open House. Modern Makers will take place Oct. 28, 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the College’s Chester Campus, located at 13101 Jefferson Davis Hwy. There is no charge to attend.

Modern Makers is divided into information technology/engineering, manufacturing, health, and science tracks that are filled with a variety of informative experiences. The evening is set-up so that attendees may join the open house at any time, stay within one track or explore multiple tracks. Modern Makers features hands-on activities; demonstrations of cutting-edge simulators; tours of Tyler’s high-tech labs; information on industry-recognized certifications; talks from business and industry experts; opportunities to discuss career options and skillset needs with area employers; and information on Tyler’s programs and services. Food trucks also will be on hand.
