Green in the Dogpound

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. The warmer weather has got my green thumb a twitching and this weekend I planted some new roses in the front of my house. If you remember my faithful pack members, several years ago, I related to you that my beautiful roses that I have had since I built this house, got a nasty virus that could only be cured by digging them up and burning them. They were some of the most beautiful roses I have grown for a very long time and it broke my heart to have to completely destroy seven years of growth. Then my next flowers I bought just did not grow very well…they did not fill out and the flowers were not that big. I gave them two years but they never really took root, so I dug them up…put then in another flower bed…and replaced them with some rose stock from a seed nursery. The roots looked very healthy and strong so I am hoping my beloved roses come back in full flower this year. The other new thing I got this weekend was a riding lawn mower. Actually it is used…I don’t make those kinds of bucks to buy a new one, and it is my first riding lawn mower. I should have done this years ago. I have just over an acre. The part around the house is mowable by hand, but about half an acre around the pond is more like an unimproved farm meadow. With all its ups and downs…ruts…etc, it would just tear up a regular hand mower and take forever to mow. So I have always hired to have that part of my lawn mowed – if you want to call it that. At first it was not too expensive…found a local high school kid who was making money for college by doing lawn care at $50 a crack. Then he moved on to other things and one of the guys at work who lived just down the road needed some extra money, so I let him mow it for $75 at a time. He finally got tired of that so I had to round up someone who did this full time and now my cost was up to $100. Twice a month for five to six months…that starts to add up. They did a good job though. They had a team of four guys; two would take off on riding mowers and two would have the weed trimmers, and in about 30 minutes they were done…packed …and off to their next job. Now I will not be that fast, my mower is a lot smaller, 22 horsepower with a 46 inch deck..but I can take several evenings to do it…just hope it is up to the uneven ground…that is hard on machine and body.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

The Democrats are the party that says government will make you smarter, taller, richer, and remove the crabgrass on your lawn. The Republicans are the party that says government doesn’t work and then they get elected and prove it. P. J. Orouke

WHY CHICKENS?

Why did the chicken cross the road halfway? She wanted to lay it on the line.

Why did the chicken cross the basketball court? He heard the referee calling fowls.

Why did the chicken cross the playground? To get to the other slide.

Why did the chicken scientist cross the road? To invent the other side.

What do you get when you cross a chicken and a pit bull? Just the pit bull.

That is all I have for now. As always be good, do good, play safe, and remember that green is nice calming color.
