CHESTERFIELD – In the spring of 2017, Communities in Schools of Chesterfield hosted its first “CIS Fest” as a way to bring about awareness to the organization and its critical roles operating within Chesterfield County Public Schools. The response exceeded the organization’s expectations.
“We’re not new to the community; we’ve been here for more than 20 years,” CIS Executive Director Chesterfield Jay Swedenborg said. “When we decided to host a festival-style event to spread the word about what we are doing – and our next big project – we weren’t sure if anyone would show. Boy, were we wrong!”
CIS of Chesterfield is a non-profit organization that supports the Chesterfield community through integrated student support services within Chesterfield schools.
By partnering with students and their families when they show signs of struggle, CIS of Chesterfield is able to provide the resources, support, and motivation needed to get through tough times. The organization currently serves 4,700 students by positioning a site coordinator at each of the six Chesterfield schools, including Bellwood Elementary, Chalkley Elementary, Ettrick Elementary, Falling Creek Middle, Salem Middle and Carver College and Career Academy.
The CIS of Chesterfield Board of Directors and Chesterfield County Public Schools’ leadership, including Superintendent James Lane and the School Board, want to see CIS of Chesterfield expand to additional schools in the fall of 2018 and again in the fall of 2019.
Local businesses are rallying around CIS of Chesterfield by making donations to support their work and by sponsoring CIS Fest 2018. The event is a “family first” festival that features local bands, fun activities for all ages, and great local fare. Learn more about CIS of Chesterfield, the organization’s impact, and its vision to support students with a community of support by bringing your family with you to this fun, free event from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 24 at XL Sports World in Midlothian.
