Are you a senior who could use a pet? Chesterfield Animal Services has a special program just for you!

“Seniors can adopt a pet for $10,” said Carrie Jones, Animal Services Manager.

The program began in early 2000 and has seen many successful adoptions, Jones said.

What does the $10 cover? Spaying, neutering, preventative vaccinations, rabies vaccination (if animal is 4 months or older), heartworm testing and microchip for dogs, and FELV/FIV testing for cats.

What are some benefits for a senior having a pet? “Pets provide companionship and emotional support to seniors. Owning a pet is beneficial physically, as it encourages exercise, like taking your dog for a walk, as well as for mental health,” Jones explained.

Jones says, if a community member is interested in adopting, call (804) 748-1683 to schedule a time to meet the available pets. Office staff is available by phone Monday to Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Those adopting  need to bring a driver’s license or photo ID and proof of address (if different than ID) to the appointment. If adopting a dog, bring along any other dogs in the home so the staff  can ensure they are compatible. The $10 adoption fee must be cash or check. Adoptions are facilitated completely outdoors while practicing social distancing standards. Staff members are also required to wear face masks at this time. When things return to normal, those adopting would not need an appointment and will be able to visit the shelter during normal operating hours. Monday to Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
