As L.C. Bird alum Rayshard Ashby gets ready to take the field for his senior season for Virginia Tech, he’ll do so with a litany of preseason honors and awards.

Athlon Sports named him a preseason All-American last week, in addition to him being announced as a team captain for the Hokies. He also received a spot on the Bednarik Award preseason watch list, that being the award for collegeootball; best defensive player. Phil Steele named him to his preseason All-American second team.

All of this comes on the heels of a season in which he won ACC Linebacker of the Week five times, tallied 120 tackles ,and registered five sacks.

Virginia Tech’s first game of the season has already been postponed due to COVID-19 issues on campus, but Ashby and the Hokies are ready to take the field, and they figure to be able to do so on Sept. 26 when they are scheduled to take on North Carolina State and Ashby’s former teammate, Isaiah Moore.

The short-term goal for Ashby is to help the Hokies put together an excellent season, but Ashby is on the radar of many teams forthe 2021 NFL Draft.
