Trinidad chooses ODU, other Skyhawk recruits busy with offers

Over the span of a few months, Kris Trinidad’s recruiting star shone bright, attracting 13 scholarship offers before making a decision and committing to Old Dominion University.

Interestingly, Trinidad had committed weeks before he announced it on Twitter, a further testament to what coach Troy Taylor calls an “old-school mentality.” In fact, Trinidad didn’t have a single social media account before his recruiting began, and he used it so little, he forgot to tweet his commitment.

Air Force, Army, Bryant, Bucknell, Campbell, Central Michigan, Gardner-Webb, Navy, Rhode Island, Richmond, Sacred Heart, and William & Mary were the other offers that Trinidad notched, and represent the schools that lost out on the 6-6, 210 pound athlete.

During the 2019 season, Trinidad totaled 38 tackles – nine for a loss of yardage, 5 1/2 sacks – and recovered two fumbles for a very young team that experienced its ups and downs, narrowly missing the playoffs.

In 2020, Trinidad will look to lead the defense and a much more experienced team into battle. The season is slated to start, Feb. 26 at Huguenot.

In other recruiting news, a football and track athlete, Jeremiah Wilks, snagged a preferred walk-on to play football at West Virginia Wesleyan. That university joining Livingstone College of the CIAA as schools that have recently offered, but is the first school to offer any sort of status for football. The ultra-athletic Wilks is one of L.C. Bird track’s top hurdlers under coach Adam Canning, and he provides an athletic force for the Skyhawks on the gridiron as well.

Jordyn Bentley picked up his first football offer from West Virginia State University this past week. At 6-4, and 200 pounds, Bentley has an athletic frame that can further develop as time passes. For the Skyhawks, he’s appeared at wide receiver and defensive back, and he has gotten reps at quarterback.

Xavier Gordon, another ultra-athletic Skyhawk, is weighing his own college options. He recently took a visit to Division III Bridgewater, and he has drawn interest from the Apprentice School. Gordon played some quarterback for L.C. Bird but has also excelled in the defensive backfield.
