“The program had hit rock bottom the season before I got there,” Simon said. “They had only won one game the year before, and there just wasn’t any interest.”
Five seasons ago, Carver Academy’s program won a single game. The following season they won five games, and then doubled it to 10 the next season, getting a taste of playoff action but falling in the first round to Altavista. In year three of Simon’s tenure, the team won a first-round game against Stonewall Jackson. Now, they’ve won the regular season championship and took the district tournament with a 71-53 win over King and Queen Central on Feb. 13. Carver will head to the regional tournament as the top seed in region 1B.
“This team is special because they rejoice in each other’s success and compete for the opportunity to play,” Simon said.
Carver defeated Appomattox Regional Governor’s School 82-38 on Monday, Feb. 18, and play in the 1B region semifinals against William Campbell on Thursday, Feb. 21.
