According to a memo from interim school superintendent Donald R. Kenbridge was the only company to bid on the project. School district staff cited savings of $1.1 million and $2.5…

Land near the top of the photo includes a rock quarry that Shoosmith Bros. Inc. wants to use for its landfill. After being unanimously turned down July 25 by the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors on its request for a permit to use a rock quarry as a landfill, the owner of the landfill, Shoosmith Bros. Inc., recently filed another lawsuit against the county in Chesterfield Circuit Court. Shoosmith’s attorney, Andrea Wortzel, filed the suit Aug. 21. This and a lawsuit the company filed June 19, 2017, are the next steps in a battle between the county and Shoosmith over…

By a 4-0 vote with James Holland absent, the county board of supervisors last week approved the purchase of a 1.75-acre parcel in Ettrick to support a new elementary school and fire station. The purchase price of $20,000 represented the assessed value of the land, according to the county’s real property manager, John Harmon. The land will be purchased from Stallings Oil Co. There was some confusion about how the agenda item was listed, but the county’s deputy administrator for community development, Bill Dupler, said that no buildings are planned for the property, which is located south of Chesterfield Avenue,…

ABOVE: Residents listen to public comment at 11:55 p.m. July 25 during a county board of supervisors meeting. The Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors unanimously denied a request from Shoosmith Bros., Inc. to use its granite quarry as a landfill during a July 25 meeting that lasted more than seven hours. Thirty-four people spoke for almost 90 minutes during public comment that began at 11:55 p.m. Only three were in favor of the request. Supervisors were swayed by fears that a liner that would encase the 83-acre, 200-feet-deep quarry could fail due to heavy rainfall, an earthquake and other reasons. Andrea…

The Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted last week to proceed with the $700,000 purchase of 21.2 acres for a revamped Harrowgate Park. The purchase of land from Harrowgate LC should close within 30 days, county parks chief Stuart Connock said. He added that some wetlands on the perimeter of the site could allow for educational opportunities for students at Carver Middle and the future Harrowgate Elementary. He said county staff would finalize a development plan and bring that to the supervisors in September. The land purchase and the relocation of Harrowgate Elementary could pave the way for a…

ABOVE: A vehicle passes by on Ware Bottom Spring Road, near where Barney McLaughlin plans to relocate his home construction business and house a stone-cutting operation. The buildings would be located on the left behind a 50-foot tree buffer. It looks as though Barney McLaughlin will be able to relocate his home construction business after all. The county supervisors unanimously approved McLaughlin’s request to rezone a 2.2-acre property at 1701 Ware Bottom Spring Road from I-1 light industrial to I-3 heavy industrial. The supervisors’ approval came in spite of the Planning Commission voting to recommend denial of the rezoning request by…

A proposed new elementary school at the Magnolia Green subdivision in the western part of the Matoaca district has been postponed at least a year following the Board of Supervisors’ actions July 25. The Chesterfield County school board voted 4-1 during a special meeting July 11 to ask the supervisors to add some $36 million to the school district’s Capital Improvement Plan to allow for an elementary school to be built at Magnolia Green and open in the fall of 2020. On July 25, a motion by Matoaca District supervisor Steve Elswick to place the Magnolia Green Elementary School in…

Home builder Barney McLaughlin’s proposal to rezone a 2.2-acre property at 1701 Ware Bottom Spring Road received a thumbs-down recommendation from the Planning Commission last month. The 3-1 vote to recommend denial will be considered by the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors at 6 p.m. July 25. McLaughlin is requesting to rezone the property from I-1 light industrial to I-3 heavy industrial. At the June 19 Planning Commission meeting, Claire Shirley, president of Gradient PC engineering services, said she has been working with county staff on the proposal for a year. “We were quite surprised and upset it was being…

The longevity of a local landfill may depend on an application filed recently with Chesterfield County. Shoosmith Bros., Inc. recently filed a permit application with the county that would allow it to use some 180 acres of land which includes a rock quarry that it acquired in 1997. (The quarry itself is 83 acres.) Fletcher Kelly, Shoosmith Bros., Inc.’s vice president of operations and one of six co-owners, said the business that was opened in 1976 by the Shoosmith Brothers has about seven or eight years of life left. Although some neighbors have complained about odors and noise associated with…
