The Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia, (CHSV), in partnership with the Chesterfield County Department of Parks and Recreation, presents an American Heritage merit badge workshop for Boy Scouts in December. The Boy Scout American Heritage Merit Badge Workshop will be held on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. at Historic Trinity Church, 10111 Iron Bridge Rd., Chesterfield. This workshop fulfills merit badge requirements concerning history and cultural heritage. Cost is $10 and registration is through the CHSV website at www.chesterfieldhistory.com. Do you have an interest in gardening? Would you like to help educate the public about environmentally-sound gardening practices? If so, the Chesterfield Master Gardener Program may be for you! Every spring, the Chesterfield Cooperative Extension office trains a new class of Master Gardeners, teaching them about the basics of horticulture and gardening. The 2016 Master Gardener class meets three times a week for nine weeks, beginning in February. Training covers a range of gardening topics including botany, soils, entomology, integrated pest management, propagation, vegetable and sustainable gardening, native plants, turf, indoor plants, fruit trees, pruning, weeds and water quality.…

The Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia (CHSV) will offer a course of six classes entitled, “Chasing Your Ancestors: Beginning Genealogy” on Saturday mornings, starting on October 3 thru November 7 in the society research library located in Historic Trinity Church, 10111 Iron Bridge Rd. The Pocahontas Chapter of Virginia Master Naturalists is accepting training applications now until October 30 for the 2016 Basic Training Class, which will be held January 5 to the end of April. The Virginia Master Naturalist Program is a statewide corps of volunteers providing education, outreach, and service dedicated to the beneficial management of natural resources and natural areas within their communities. Become Master Naturalists through 40 hours of basic training and field trips. The curriculum includes: basic ecology, geology, herpetology, botany, ornithology, dendrology, native species, entomology, mammalogy, ichthyology and more. There is still time for representatives of area places of worship to register for the Chesterfield County Police Department’s Safety Conference for Places of Worship on Aug. 26, 2015. The conference, which is being hosted by the department’s Crime Prevention Unit, will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Chesterfield Career & Technical Center, 13900 Hull Street Road. With a focus on “Aqua-Foods Production for the Individual”, Virginia State University’s three-day Fish School begins Wednesday, July 8, and runs through Friday, July 10.  Free and open to the public, the school is designed for anyone interested in growing freshwater fish or shrimp for fun or profit. Morning discussions will feature lectures followed by hands-on group afternoon activities.  Day one topics include fish and freshwater shrimp production, nutrition and water quality. The Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia (CHSV), in partnership with Chesterfield County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer four camps this summer. Diggin’ in History for Beginners is designed for children ages eight to12 who will learn how to search for clues from the past. Hands-on activities include site surveys, excavations and artifact repair. A field trip to the Prince George Heritage Museum is included.
