The first day of the New Year brought out hundreds of families to breath fresh air and discover Pocahontas State Park for the First Day Hike. Celebrating their 80th anniversary in 2016 of the Virginia State Park system, there were a number of ways to participate for those interested in self-guided opportunities, geocaching, discovering the parks newly created tree I.D., trails and or visiting the Nature Center, CCC Museum and the front office. The Kiwanis Club of Chester kicked off their annual Christmas Parade Sunday at 2 p.m. to warm skies and record-breaking crowds. The 60-plus line-up for the two-hour parade from the Chester YMCA to the Chester Village Green included marching bands and walkers, floats, performing units, and vehicles from participating businesses and non-profit groups. On Saturday, Dec. 19 at 6 p.m, the Bermuda Baptist Praise Team and the Enon Baptist Praise Team will present a night of Christmas music, under the stars. This is a free event, held on the outdoor stage at Chester Village Green. There will be hot chocolate, coffee and cookies. Bring a chair or blanket and come enjoy. The Virginia Chapter Ninety-Nines will once again be holding a Toy Airlift at Richmond Executive-Chesterfield County Airport this Saturday. The Toy Airlift will benefit the children of military personnel at Fort Lee, Virginia and the veterans at McGuire Veterans’ Hospital. The airport has placed a toy collection box in their lobby where pilots and residents can place new, unwrapped toys for children of all ages.  The toys will be distributed to military families who need help providing for their children, many of whom are injured, ill or struggling financially.
