John E. “Jay” Burchell Jr. won national recognition for Community Service and Industry Accomplishments at NADA Convention last month. The nomination of Burchell, president and executive manager of Heritage Chevrolet in Chester, for the 2017 TIME Dealer of the Year award was announced by Time Magazine. Chesterfield County and Virginia State University (VSU) officials and friends of the Appomattox riverfront dedicated the Appomattox Trail, one of the newest parks managed by Chesterfield County’s Department of Parks and Recreation, last month. In Aaron Xavier Wittman’s senior year at The Citadel, his yearbook quote was “If you don’t live for something, you will die for nothing.” His father, Duane Wittman, said it was shocking that he chose this quote, but that it was also a prophetic sign of things to come. Sgt. Wittman became the first U.S. casualty of 2013 in the War on Terror when he was killed in Kyogyani district, Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan on January 10, 2013. Chester Garden Club members created spectacular floral arrangements interpreting selected art pieces during the 13th bi-annual Fine Arts & Flowers at the Virginia Museum of Art. They joined volunteers from over 50 garden clubs in Virginia. Nearly 90 interpretive arrangements were on display during the four-day event., All of the flowers for the arrangements — upward of 8,000 stems — have been donated by Strange’s Florist.

Pictured above is the home place of Chester’s first doctor and his wife, Dr. Alvin Judson Hurt and Maud McLaurine Hurt. Their home sat on the corner of Harrowgate and Old Hundred roads. When the Hurts came to Chester in 1904, they took up residence at the Chester Hotel. Dr. Hurt liked Chester because it was country and he liked to fox hunt. Mrs. Hurt saw Chester as a poor community with no cultural advantages. Dr. Hurt had office hours in the morning and visited his patients in the afternoon. Recognizing the link between economic opportunity and transportation infrastructure that efficiently moves people and goods is paramount to a healthy local economy. The Richmond region and the Virginia Secretary of Transportation are conducting a study of a key jobs corridor in the Richmond region. This October, Phillips’ Seniors is celebrating 20 years. “The idea of having a senior group sponsored by the Phillips Auxiliary was an idea proposed by Polly Eggleston,” said Jackie Ferguson, Eggleston’s daughter and a member of Phillips’s Auxiliary. “She requested that the auxiliary think about the increased number of seniors in the community.” The auxiliary membership began discussing the outreach project and decided to sponsor a monthly luncheon and a senior-related program from September to June.
