Bensley Park will honor all veterans and active military personnel Nov. 12 with a “Navy Day” theme ceremony. The two-hour ceremony will begin at 11 a.m., and its special guest speaker will be Navy Lt. Morgan Looney, a Richmond native. On Sunday, the bridge on West Hundred Road in Chester was named in honor of fallen Sgt. Aaron X. Wittman, U.S. Army. At a ceremony at Chester Village Green, the bridge was officially named the Sergeant Aaron Xavier Wittman Memorial Bridge. Representatives and alumni from The Citadel, Military College of South Carolina, where Wittman graduated, attended the ceremony. Lt. Col. Jack W. Parker Jr., U.S. Army and The Citadel Class of 1987, read a poem that he wrote in Wittman’s honor. Wittman died on Jan. 10, 2013, while serving during Operation Enduring Freedom. Jay Burchell, president and general manager of Heritage Chevrolet, presented a big check in the amount of $1,000 to the Chester Family YMCA last month. Along with the check, soccer kits filled with various items such as equipment bags, pop-up goals, corner flags, soccer balls, and Chevy Youth Soccer T-shirts were also donated to the Y’s soccer program. Betty Matthews, who is known as a mover and shaker in Chester celebrated with 50-plus friends and family her 90th birthday. The festivities took place last Sunday at Swift Creek Playhouse. Betty is well known for her 20-year advocacy of the Chesterfield Center for the Arts and its foundation, She founded the organization to promote her vision. Construction on the Arts Center will begin within the next several months.

Jake Halder, owner of one-half interest in two thoroughbred colts, gave his hopefuls daily workouts in preparation for a full racing season. The first ever Chesterfield CountyPublic Safety Chili Cook Off had 20 entries from four departments competing for Public Safety Chili Grand Master. The cook-off enlisted employees from ECC, Police, Fire, and Sheriff’s departments and was held at the Eanes-Pittman Public Safety Training Center last Tuesday. The idea came from Sgt. Bivens, who had organized a similar chili cook off with his shift at the jail. Members of the Sheriff’s Office, Fire & EMS, Police and Emergency Communications participated.
