As an open-air, living history museum, Henricus Historical Park is well positioned to welcome back visitors in a safe and fun environment. Maurice Smith has always wanted to write a book. Once he turned 50, he made his dream a reality when he wrote and released “Uncle Charles and Me” in February. The book chronicles the relationship between an uncle and his nephew, who is based on Smith’s son Myles. Chesterfield County Public Schools is proposing a pre-Labor Day start to the 2021-22 school year. Sharon Pope, CCPS’s chief academic officer, spoke to the school board about the proposal during the board’s May 12 work session. “It seems an odd time to talk now” about the proposal, she said, but noted that school staff is presenting it early to allow more time for preparation. The 2021 pre-Labor Day start includes a first instructional day of Aug. 23. When the COVID-19 pandemic started to affect Chesterfield County, and services were forced to modify, the county’s Parks and Recreation Department wasted no time to pivot to virtual recreation programs. Since March 17, the Parks and Recreation Department has been producing virtual recreation programming for the public. It includes activities, tours, classes and videos all organized into different categories, such as family activities, history, nature, outdoor activities and fitness. The Kiwanis Club of Chester has been unable to meet due to the COVID 19 event, but that has not curtailed its commitment to assist the community or the children of Chester. They recently presented the Chesterfield Food Bank with a check for $2,500, which was in addition to the $1,000 previously donated.
