Chesterfield Police recently arrested a man in connection with felony embezzlement that occurred at L.C. Bird High School. David Wayne Bedwell, 48, used school purchase orders to purchase approximately $5,000 worth of equipment and other items, which he allegedly took with him to Henrico upon being hired as the head coach at Hermitage High School in February. Bedwell, of the 2100 block of Hunters Mill Road in Powhatan, was employed as the athletic director at L.C. Bird High School when the purchases were made, police said. It was a close call on the Varina-Enon Bridge on Tuesday, Aug. 13, when a pickup truck hauling a machine jackknifed and crashed. Corrine Geller of the Virginia State Police said the single-vehicle crash occurred around 11:52 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 295 at mile marker 18. “The backhoe the truck was towing fell off the trailer and into the travel lane.” Geller said. “The driver and passenger in the pickup truck were not injured.” (Billy Spivey photo)

Around 2:26 p.m., a dump truck-trailer crashed on Beach at Second Branch Road, overturning onto its roof and catching fire. A load of logs and debris that was being hauled spilled. Edwards, according to another local attorney. Police issued a press release about the alleged assault of a man in a hallway of an office building in the 10100 block of Krause Road south of Iron Bridge Road on Wednesday, Aug. 7. That comes in spite of the county not receiving additional funding from the state for such in last or this year’s budgets. The Chesterfield County Police Department is investigating a drowning of a 2-year-old girl. Police responded to a report of a possible drowning at a residence in the 4300 block of Lilking Court, south of Route 10 east of Harrowgate Road, on Monday, July 8. Officers learned that a 2-year-old girl had been found unresponsive in a swimming pool. Other residents of the house removed the victim from the pool and performed CPR on her until officers arrived. A dump truck spilled wood chips. (Billy Spivey) A dump truck crashed in the 11400 block of Nash Road on Tuesday, May 28. The truck overturned after the driver lost control around 1:30 p.m. Officials said the driver was able to get out of the vehicle on his own while rescuers were on the way. Some diesel fuel spilled, along with a load of wood chips. There were no injuries, and the driver was not charged. The road was closed for several hours for clean up.
There may have been some scary moments for motorists at the intersection of Iron Bridge Road and Deerfield Drive on May 28 when a school bus went out of control and crashed at 1:39 p.m. The bus “which did not have any students on it, was traveling east on Iron Bridge Road approaching the intersection with Deerfield Drive,” police spokeswoman Liz Caroon said.
