Twelve-year-old Gabriella Watson was energized and inspired to make a difference this holiday season. Recruiting her book club at Matoaca Middle School, the 14-member group held a food drive at both the East and West campus. During the week of November 16 through 20, Matoaca’s FBLA sponsored their annual “Feather the Turkey” event to raise money for the Virginia FBLA State Service Project, ProjectASK. For the past five years, Matoaca’s FBLA has sponsored this event to support ASK, a non-profit organization started by parents of children receiving cancer treatments at the VCU Massey Cancer Center. Forty years later, ASK has now grown to be comprised of parents, health-professionals, and other concerned citizens. The Chesterfield County School Board has hired BWP & Associates to conduct a national search for the next superintendent of Chesterfield County Public Schools. BWP & Associates representatives Dr. Kevin Castner and Dr. Wayne Harris attended a recent School Board meeting to discuss the search and selection process. BWP will seek a successor to Dr. Marcus Newsome, who announced in the fall that he would retire at the end of the 2015-16 school year. The search will include a lengthy period for public input, including a survey available to all residents and a number of community forums. An online survey…

High school cafeterias in Chesterfield County Public Schools are changing. For the first time in 20 years, they are returning to the federal breakfast and lunch program. What does this mean for families? The biggest change is that families with high school students will now be able to apply for free or reduced-price meals, just like families with elementary and middle school students. The Bank of Southside Virginia’s, Shelley Hill, presents Enon Elementary student, Tyliyah Williams, with her framed winning art work. She received over 1,000 votes on Facebook to win the contest. Also pictured are Christopher Butt, Enon’s Art Teacher and Ericka Berry, Tyliyah’s fourth-grade teacher. Tyliyah was given a savings account and the Bank of Southside Virginia donated $500 to Enon Elementary.

Chesterfield County teachers won seven of this year’s R.E.B. Awards for Teaching Excellence. The annual awards program, which is a partnership between the Community Foundation and the R.E.B. Foundation, recognizes excellence in public education by awarding cash grants to outstanding public school teachers in central Virginia. This year, 102 teachers were nominated by students, parents and colleagues and 34 of those nominees became finalists. From the finalists, 16 winners were chosen to receive grants of $8,100 to $12,000 that will provide learning opportunities during the adventure of a lifetime.
