Ecoff Elementary School has been preparing for weeks to have a real Pow Wow led by five Native American guests to honor Ecoff’s Tribe Pride. On November 17, Ecoff will be hosting Native American guests for a school Pow Wow! Students will be participating with their grade level during resource time. They will get to dress for the occasion with vests, t-shirts, and headdresses made in resource class. Curtis Elementary was the first school in Chesterfield County to have the Watch DOGS (Dads Of Great Students) program. Watch DOGS is a nationwide program where dads or other positive male role models volunteer one or more school days in the school. “We are very proud of our awesome program,” said Susan Pereira, principal at Curtis Elementary. In this picture, one of their Watch DOGS, Mr. Rouze is reading with two kindergarten students from Mrs. Morehead’s class. His daughter is in this class.

If your kids are not already a Tim Green fan, the author and NFL alumnus, they may have become one if she or he was lucky enough to see his presentation at Elizabeth Davis Middle School last Wednesday. Green spoke to Davis’ sixth grade classes and seventh grade English class students about his brand-new book, “Kid Owner.” He also discussed his involvement in the NFL’s Play60/Read20 initiative, which he kicked off with the NY Giants in September and followed up recently with the Chicago Bears and Dallas Cowboys. Carver Middle eighth-graders in the Fit for Life class took on the Chesterfield Challenge Course recently. This course presents physical, psychological and social challenges that help students build confidence and work together to solve problems. It’s also a blast!

Chesterfield County Public Schools is one of six school districts nationwide to be selected as Ambassador Districts for the #GoOpen campaign of the U.S. Department of Education. The initiative, which encourages states, school districts and educators to replace traditional textbooks with openly licensed educational materials, was announced Oct. 29 during an Open Education Symposium held at the White House. The #GoOpen Ambassador Districts will serve as mentors to school districts transitioning to openly licensed learning materials. The grounds at C.E. Curtis Elementary School were beautified recently when the student body planted one thousand spring bulbs and 508 pansies. The beautification project was started by senior office manager, Brenda Bush in the mid 90s.  PTA member, Jenny Smith, picked up the project this year and organized the day’s event.  Parents were asked to purchase a pansy for their child to plant.  The bulbs were donated by Brickman/ValleyCrest Landscape Maintenance. Many parent volunteers came out and supported the event.  Smith said, “The students are very excited to watch the plants they planted grow throughout the school year.”

Carver, Clover Hill, Crenshaw, A.M. Davis, Hopkins and Meadowbrook regain full accreditation All 61 schools within Chesterfield County is accredited once again, according to 2015-16 school year information released by the Virginia Department of Education. The school division is one of the largest in the state with no schools denied accreditation. Of the 61 comprehensive schools within the Chesterfield County school division, 52 are fully accredited by the Virginia Department of Education.
