According to data released by the Virginia Department of Education, 91 percent of Chesterfield County Public Schools students who entered ninth grade in 2011 graduated in four years. The school division’s on-time graduation percentage topped the state average of 90.5 percent. Fifty-six percent of Chesterfield County’s class of 2015 graduated with a more rigorous advanced studies diploma, according to VDOE records. This year, at the Chesterfield County Fair, L. C. Bird High School art student, Olivia Trompeta, received six awards for her artwork in the youth art competition. Her artwork, “Final Countdown” won Best of Show at the high school level. “Lost Pages” and “Blowing Balloons” were entered in the Junior Arts and Crafts competition, which is open to all kids ages three to17. “Lost Pages” won first place while “Blowing Balloons” placed second. “Blowing Balloons” also received a Silver Key in the Scholastic’s Art and Writing Competition. To help students and their parents learn about the variety of high school options, Chesterfield County Public Schools will hold two information fairs plus open houses at every specialty center and governor’s school. Students who choose to apply to a specialty center or governor’s school do so in eighth grade, so middle school students and parents interested in learning more about these high school opportunities are invited to these events. “Off the Grid,” a solar power initiative was awarded on Thursday, Oct. 1 to Chesterfield Career & Technical Center @ Courthouse (CCTC). Dominion Virginia Power presented an Educational Partnership grant for the electricity class’ proposed Green Energy Shack, which is an existing structure in the courtyard of the school. The structure will be removed from its traditional electrical source, and the students will then replace the former power source with a self-sustaining solar power system that can run a small refrigerator, stereo, computer, lights and television. Governor Terry McAuliffe visited Ecoff Elementary School and their pre-Kindergarten classroom last week. The new pre-K program was made possible through new Federal dollars and the Virginia Preschool Initiative to serve at-risk youth. McAuliffe believes every child in Virginia should have access to a pre-K education and has made this a priority initiative of his administration. His interaction during his visit with the children cemented his commitment to education and Virginia’s youth and his efforts to bring Federal dollars to Virginia school districts. Students returning home on bus number 76 (Route 6-2) last week on Thursday, got a little thrill when the bus had mechanical problems. Fire engine 1 responded and quickly solved the problem as kids were transferred to another bus. Some students were picked up by their parents.

A survey conducted this past spring by the Virginia Association of School Superintendents (VASS) revealed that drastic reductions in state funding for public education and maximum efforts by localities to replace lost funds have pushed Virginia’s schools to the limits of their human and financial capacity in their attempts to meet today’s expectations and serve the needs of students. Chesterfield County’s student performance on state-mandated Standards of Learning reading and mathematics tests showed expected growth during the 2014-15 school year, increasing by 5 percentage points each and continuing to exceed state averages. Data released today by the Virginia Department of Education also show Chesterfield County Public Schools student pass rates increased in science, history and writing and put Chesterfield students ahead of state averages once again. R.E.B. recipient, Anne Canipe, has completed her around-the-world trip, days before the start of the new school year and her teaching assignment in the Social Studies Department at Cosby Health Science Specialty Center teaching World History I, AP Human Geography and Medical Law & Ethics. Canipe’s 27-day adventure in East Asia consisted of traveling to Japan for the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. She traveled to China where she discovered wonders of the world and then on to Hong Kong visiting high school classrooms and their AP Geography program and sightseeing before returning home.
