The American Legion Post 284 Buccaneers have been in full swing over the last month. Their record sits at 6-3 as they come down the stretch. Led by third-year coach Jeremy Cole, the 18-player roster is packed with student-athletes and former student-athletes from the Village News’ coverage area. These include: Thomas Dale High School (6): Justin Berger, Drew Camp, Ryan Hayzlett, Karson Jennings, Andrew Roach and Nathan Tuck; and Matoaca High School (6): Ethan Everhart, Bobby Johnson, Grayson Kirby, Justin Parker, Hunter Vaughan and Grant Vest. Karson Jennings in action on the pitching mound. A big part of having a winning baseball team is pitching. Thankfully for Thomas Dale High School, they’ve had Karson Jennings on the hill. For his performance as staff ace, he is the Village News Player of the Year. After bursting on the scenes with a shutout of First Colonial in the state tournament as a junior, Jennings followed that up with an outstanding senior year. The 6-foot 4-inch hurler had a 7-2 record with a 2.29 ERA. His control was excellent. He only walked eight batters over 55 innings, but struck…
HernandezHinesKennedy In his first year at the helm of L.C. Bird High School’s baseball team, Jake Wiseman led the Skyhawks to a 10-10 record, which was their best season since 2009. A big part of that was three seniors – Shawn Hernandez, Jaelen Hines and Zack Kennedy – who recently signed to play in college. Hernandez will head to Marymount University in Arlington, Hines will suit up for Virginia Wesleyan University, and Kennedy is committed to Randolph-Macon College. A 5-foot 7-inch shortstop, Hernandez may have been small in stature but led the team with four home runs. Hines, according to…
“A good catcher is the quarterback, the carburetor, the lead dog, the pulse taker, the traffic cop and sometimes a lot of unprintable things, but no team gets very far without one,” said Miller Huggins, Baseball Hall of Famer. Luckily for coach Chris Marshall and Thomas Dale High School, the Knights have a very talented backstop. Cole Garrett hit three home runs last week to help defeat Colonial Heights, defending state champions Prince George and tough Region 6 opponent Riverbend. The three wins bumped Thomas Dale’s record to 10-1 on the season. Garrett, a junior, is already committed to VMI,…
After making his debut in professional baseball last year, Nathan Eaton got word of a promotion after this year’s spring training. He started the year in the South Atlantic League with the Lexington Legends. The former Thomas Dale Knights standout was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 21st round of the June amateur draft. He did something most 21st round picks don’t do: he hit .354 in over 260 at-bats with 20 doubles, 12 triples and five home runs while driving in 53 runs and stealing 19 bases in just 66 games for the Idaho Falls Chukars, the…
In Chris Olsen’s second year at Matoaca High School, the Warriors experienced another successful season. They finished 14-5, but didn’t make the playoff run they hoped for, falling at the hands of Douglas Freeman in the first round of the regional tournament. Gone are three key contributors: Hunter Vaughan (club baseball at Longwood University), Justin Parker (North Carolina Central University) and Jacob Waltman. The Warriors will have a lot of options and depth on the mound this year. Juniors Troy Whitaker, Brandon Arrowood, Chase Garrett and Marcus Dreher should all see time on the bump. Look for Whitaker to take…
Thomas Dale High School baseball made a historic run last year, earning the program’s first trip to the state tournament. They return a wealth of pitching depth and some great offensive pieces to navigate through a tough schedule in 2019. Three key contributors departed: Tyler Bailey, shortstop, and Tanner Holben, third baseman, were first team All-State and have gone on to college. Drew Camp, the team’s first baseman, was second team All-State and is also in college. “One of our strengths this year will be pitching depth,” coach Chris Marshall said. “We return our No. 1 starter, Karson Jennings, along with…
CHESTERFIELD – Chesterfield Baseball Clubs narrowly lost in the third round of last week’s Bronco-11 World Series, falling to the eventual champions from Chicago. CBC won a first-round game over Ciudad Juarez, Mexico by a count of 6-5. Patrick Gibrall picked up the win, while infielder Dylan Meyer enjoyed a three-hit game. Four other players joined in with multi-hit games, as Conner Hedgepeth, Gabe Smith, Nolan Harris and Gibrall each had two base knocks. CBC then faced off with Chicago in the second round of the split-bracket tournament. Chesterfield nearly overcame a slow start after trailing 7-5 at the end…
