By David Evers For Terrence Whitfield, it all started on the concrete courts of O.B. Gates Elementary. What was then just a game has now become a lifestyle. Whitfield has been impressive throughout his high school career at Matoaca, both on the football field and on the court. The small forward/wide receiver has recently attracted a lot of college attention, and has received his second offer to play at the next level, this time from Virginia Union University. Though Whitfield leads the Warriors in scoring with 21.6 points per game, he’s known for playing an unselfish game of basketball; he looks…

Matoaca Boys Yousef Hatter In a tough Conference 12, the boys at Matoaca fought their way to a .500 record (12-12). After losing to Varina in the Conference 12 first round, the Warriors are aiming even higher this year. They look for their speed and athleticism to help them overcome the inexperience on the team. With two staring freshman on the team, coach Michael Knight must rely on his two senior starters to be the leaders on and off the court. Projected Starting Five G Kaleb Coleman, Freshman, 5-11 G Tyreek Carter, Senior, 5-10 F Terrance Whitfield, Senior, 6-3 F…
Meadowbrook Boys Harrison Lewis After a 11-12 season last year, Meadowbrook went into the off season with high hopes and the Monarchs continued to hold their heads high. The boys’ basketball team only lost four players due to graduation and were able to bring back most of the unit. Meadowbrook coach Jacob Oliver has a great foundation building at the Chesterfield County school and they should only improve each year to come. This year, the Monarchs will come out bigger and stronger then ever. Projected Starting 5 G Tre’Man Pope, Senior, 6-1 G Jamon Battle, Sophomore, 6-3 G Daequan Young,…
Kylon Lewis, Class of 2021, point guard from Elizabeth Davis Middle School, played his lights out this summer during his AAU season averaging 22.6 points per game and 4.2 assist. The start of his Middle School season has been no different, so far Lewis leads the Davis Ravens in scoring, and third in the county already, as of right now he is living up to everyone’s expectations. The athletic slasher from Chester will be attending Thomas Dale High School next year and by far should be a contributor to the varsity team as a ninth-grader. Lewis is starting off great…
Thomas Dale Boys By Jamal Davis Last season the boys’ basketball team at Thomas Dale finished with a 9-13 record. While that may not be where it wanted to be, it was an improvement over the year before. The Knights hope to continue to improve this season under head coach Braxton Byerson, a former standout athlete at Thomas Dale himself. Unfortunately, the Knights will be forced to do so without the help of their best player from a season ago, point guard Elijah Gregory. Even without Gregory, Byerson believes his squad is well equipped to fill the void. Projected Starting Five: G James…
By Josh Mathews The bigger they are, the harder they ball. Jyles Webster stands 6-6 and weighs 215 pounds and that’s not even the most impressive thing about him; his deceptive court speed and athleticism are comparable to that of a point guard. The Skyhawks are a highly renowned basketball team in the RVA area, and Webster plays a big role. He has an incredible range of abilities on the court, and his constant effort has been rewarded him with an offer to play basketball at the next level. The forward has recently decided that he will take his gifts to…
As the summer wears on, there may not be a hotter sports story in South Chesterfield than the collective heat that L.C. Bird boys’ basketball is generating on the recruiting trail. In addition to Tyrek Williams, two other Skyhawks have picked up recent offers in Johquin “Pinky” Wiley and 5A State Player of the Year Charles Falden. Wiley, a rising senior, has been the recipient of two mid-major offers and added Campbell University of the Big South Conference to his tally this past week. Previous offers came in from Longwood and James Madison. L.C. Bird’s point guard, Wiley plays his…

Former L.C. Bird standout and McDonald’s All-American, Taja Cole, had a lot on her mind the past couple of weeks when deciding where to continue her basketball career. After the decision making process, just one school was on her mind – the University of Georgia. “I had a great bond with coach Joni [Taylor],” Cole said. “I liked how they didn’t roll out the red carpet on my visit, they just said, this is what life will be like.” In addition to the family atmosphere at the school, Cole said that she liked the location and campus, located in Athens,…
Another Knight made their college decision this past week too, but this one was from the hardwood. Forward Elena Flowers announced that she would be playing basketball and attending Mount Olive College this fall. “Of all the colleges I visited and that were interested in me, I felt that Mount Olive was the best fit,” Flowers said. “I loved the coaches and the players.” Flowers was a force in the post under third year coach Leon Gholson, who led Thomas Dale back to regionals for the first time in five seasons. “If not for a minor injury, she would have…
