To help students and their parents learn about the variety of high school options, Chesterfield County Public Schools will hold two information fairs plus open houses at every specialty center and governor’s school. Students who choose to apply to a specialty center or governor’s school do so in eighth grade, so middle school students and parents interested in learning more about these high school opportunities are invited to these events. Information fairs offer general information and give families a chance to visit booths, ask questions and pick up information. All 13 specialty centers, both career and technical centers, both governor’s schools,…

Governor Terry McAuliffe visited Ecoff Elementary School and their pre-Kindergarten classroom last week. The new pre-K program was made possible through new Federal dollars and the Virginia Preschool Initiative to serve at-risk youth. McAuliffe believes every child in Virginia should have access to a pre-K education and has made this a priority initiative of his administration. His interaction during his visit with the children cemented his commitment to education and Virginia’s youth and his efforts to bring Federal dollars to Virginia school districts. After asking several questions of the four-year-olds, singing Happy Birthday along with the students for a fellow classmate, McAuliffe…
Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. Yes, it is that time of the year again when we check the obituaries and if we do not see our name, then that is the green light to celebrate. Of course at my age, which will go without saying, celebrating is a bit milder than my younger years. My plan right now is go out to lunch with a friend of mine who has the same birthday as I do, and attend a football game. That’s about all the excitement I can handle these days. Speaking of age,…

A constant complaint about Medicaid is that fewer healthcare providers take patients on public insurance programs, and the resulting quality of care suffers. The facts, however, tell a different story. According to the Commonwealth Fund Biennial Health Insurance Survey nearly all Medicaid (95%) and private coverage patients (94%) have a regular source of health care. The quality of care (rated excellent or very good) is higher for Medicaid patients (55%) than for those with private insurance (53%). Unfortunately, uninsured people are severely disadvantaged in both respects. Only 77% of those without insurance have a regular source of health care. And…

Bill said to his neighbor, “Did you hear Jonsey’s place, down the street, was broken into?” “Yeah, I read it in the police blotter, but they never got in, they only cut a screen,” his neighbor, Clyde, said. Bill, who lives on the cal-de-sac, bought the latest alarm system, complete with motion detectors inside and out. It included a sign that read “Protected by Electronic Alarm System” stuck in the landscaping at the entrance to his home. His system also included five security cameras that monitored everything on the outside of his home even the squirrels and Bill’s cat that…
