It’s time to investigate the EDAs

Editor: After the megasite was withdrawn by the Chesterfield Economic Development Authority in 2018, Chesterfield Citizens United and Bermuda Advocates for Responsible Development asked for a statewide investigation by the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission (the Legislature’s watchdog) into the practices of EDAs. Editor: When looking to move closer to work, we found the lovely community of Bel Arbor in 2000. We noticed the Shoosmith sign as we turned onto Iron Bridge Road, but never gave it a thought. Those who would become our neighbors didn’t mention the foul-smelling early morning and evening air. We would not realize there was a problem until after we moved in. Over the years, in spite of community complaints, the problem has only gotten worse. Old Lane Crossing, solar park approved; Carvana deferred until October

Chesterfield County supervisors last week unanimously approved rezoning applications for a residential development at 9621 Hopkins Road and a new solar farm on 1,677 acres at what was previously known as the “megasite” property, but postponed a decision on the Carvana auto storage and inspection facility until Oct. 23 so the county could advertise some new and amended proffers. Chesterfield names new deputy county administrator

Jesse Smith Last week, Chesterfield County announced that transportation director Jesse Smith will be its new deputy county administrator for community development, replacing longtime county employee Bill Dupler. The board of supervisors was expected to appoint Smith at its Sept. 25 meeting. He would begin his new role on Oct. 1. Dupler worked 28 years for the county in various capacities. In his current role, Smith leads the county’s Transportation Department and serves as a key advisor to the county administrator and the supervisors. The pumpkins are shipped from the Navajo reservation near Farmington, N.M., and sales also support the Hopi, Pueblo and Zuni tribes.
