Flu outbreak

0

This time of the year, the flu seems to be running through families in much greater numbers. Just before flu season, we are all tasked with the decision of whether to get the flu shot. As a firefighter/paramedic, I always took the flu shot, which has continued in my work as a pastor. There have been years that I may have gotten a sinus infection right after the flu shot, but I have avoided the flu every year until now. It is hard to say where or with whom an outbreak begins. I believe that my family was exposed on…

Development near Central Library pending

0

Development is pending on this vacant lot across from the Central Library. For those who have been wondering, it’s “hurry up and wait” for the Myers Retail site. The site at 9601 Lori Road across from the Central Library has had some activity, but mainly just some tree clearing, according to Ben Myers of the Myers Family Partnership. Only 3.38 acres of the 30-acre site are to be disturbed, he said, noting that a 4,585-square-foot, two-story building is planned. In the mix is a retail business, office space and a restaurant, although Myers noted that no contracts have been signed.…

Moore’s Lake cottage has new home

0

Preserving history isn’t new to Chesterfield County, but on Thursday, Feb. 14, a unique piece of the county’s roadside past was protected when a small cottage was moved from the Moore’s Lake area on Jefferson Davis Highway to Falling Creek Ironworks Park. One of approximately 40 cottages built at the Moore’s Lake retreat in 1929, the cottage serves as a reminder of a bygone time when Route 1 was the main highway from Maine to Florida and travelers from far and wide stopped at the popular vacation spot. Cottages were scattered across the retreat property, which featured a lake with…

CHESTERFIELD — After serving the citizens of Chesterfield County for nearly a half-century, Chesterfield Board of Supervisors Vice Chairman Steve A. Substitution, not deprivation

How many of you have started a diet and failed to accomplish your goals? Maybe 10 pounds a month over the next three months for a total of 30 pounds lost. That is an admirable goal if that is what you need/want to lose. For those who accomplish this goal, how many manage to keep it off? Often the course of action is lose the weight, quit the diet, and within six months to a year, you’ve gained it all back. There is a term for this: a yo-yo diet. Lose, gain it back, and repeat. Not a healthy practice.…

A sharecropper’s life: Matoaca resident talks about his grandfather’s legacy

3

Jim McKnight holds a copy of a book he wrote about his grandfather. For 30 years of William Holliday Sr.’s life, his family would recite his history and achievements at their family reunion. When Holliday died in 2004 at the age of 112, he was one of the oldest men in the country and his grandson, Jim McKnight, said he wanted his legacy to stay alive. “All I knew is that the documents and the history, once it’s written, it’s written, and if it’s just on a piece of paper, it’ll get lost and misplaced and that’s the end of…
