My oldest daughter, Tina, and her husband, Jacob, plus two dogs and a number of cats, have been riding out the tropical storm, Florence, down in North Carolina. Thomas Dale 28, Matoaca 21 Thomas Dale High School’s football team was able to hold off rival Matoaca 28-21 on the strength of a big-time player posting a big-time performance last week. Running back Chris Tyree finished the evening with 211 rushing yards on 13 carries and caught two passes for another 101 yards, scoring three total touchdowns. His two rushing touchdowns were 82 and 92 yards, and his scoring reception spanned 75 yards. Over the last few months, several fires in vacant or abandoned buildings have been intentionally set in Petersburg. It is as if this is an arsonist with a conscience, considering the type of buildings that he or she is choosing to light off. Wikipedia says arson is “a crime of intentionally, deliberately and maliciously setting fire to buildings, wildland areas, abandoned homes, vehicles or other property with the intent to cause damage or enjoy the act.” Another important term is pyromaniac, defined by Webster’s as “an irresistible impulse to start fires.” An arsonist sets fires for many reasons, including: to…

Man dies after crash on River Road

Chesterfield County police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred in the 8600 block of River Road in the Matoaca district at about 1:40 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22. Police said a vehicle was traveling on River Road when it went off the road to the right and overturned, ejecting the driver. William Cody Johnson, 25, of the 6400 block of River Road, was pronounced dead at the scene. The preliminary investigation indicates that speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the crash, and Johnson was not wearing a seat belt.

The Chesterfield County Police Department is partnering with the Chesterfield Food Bank to bring a comprehensive services fair to the community. Several organizations will participate in the fair, which is called H.O.P.E., Helping Others Pursue Excellence. Some of the participating organizations include: Department of Motor Vehicles; Drive2Work; Chesterfield Employment Center; Women, Infants and Children program; Chesterfield County Health Department; CCHASM, Chesterfield Assessment and Resource team; and Chesterfield County Public Schools. Chesterfield County Police Capt. T.O. McCullough was among the 228 law enforcement officers who graduated from the FBI National Academy Program on Sept. 13. Internationally known for its academic excellence, the National Academy Program, held at the FBI Academy at Quantico, offers 10 weeks of advanced communication, leadership and fitness training for selected officers having proven records as professionals within their agencies.
