Military Officers Present Scholarships to Graduates

The Southside Virginia Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America recently awarded 14 high school seniors Roper Memorial Scholarships, worth $1,000 each. The scholarships were made possible through a bequest by the late Mrs. Caroline Roper, who asked that her gift be used in some way to honor the sacrifice, courage, and dedication of members of the Armed Forces in defense of our nation.  To fulfill that request, the Southside Virginia Chapter established the Roper Memorial Scholarship for children and grandchildren of currently serving and retired military service members without regard to rank of the person sponsoring the applicant.…

The local baseball commitments, like a good poker hand, seem to be coming in pairs. And the good news is they are being dealt earlier too. Two outstanding athletes, Thomas Dale’s Evan Lester and L.C. Bird’s Trey Ramsey, announced their respective commitments to the colleges where each one plans to play. Lester, a 5-foot-10, 145-pounder, declared he will continue his playing career at Hampden-Sydney College after his senior season in 2017. When asked why he made his decision as early as before his final year, Lester said, “I had taken a tour about a year back and absolutely loved the…

Wildlife of the Dogpound

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound.  Well, not so wonderful at this point in time.  I finally decided to have my decade (plus) colonoscopy done Monday…so I’m sitting here on Sunday drinking this terrible tasting salt mixture.  They want me to drink a gallon of this in five hours.  I don’t drink that much water in two days, let alone in five hours!  Plus I am not allowed to eat for the next 24 hours…so that kind of puts the crimp in the weekend activities. Then to add insult to injury…when I signed up to…

Green Fingers

It is teeming with life. Green, topped with splashes of orange and yellow that belong to the bees. Gardeners will appreciate what Chester United Methodist Church members have done with their community garden. A mission project, the garden provides parishioners with some vegetables, but most of the fruit of their labor is distributed to those in need. The Methodist Church distributes the vegetables at Broadwater Apartments, A Place of Miracles Cafe, and last month at the opening gathering of the Little Libraries volunteers. But the vegetables are not free. “We [sell] the vegetables, [it’s]for a nominal cost, $1 per large…
