Steve Elswick became the chairman of the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors last week during the first meeting of the county’s government body. Without a strike of the gavel, County Administrator J.L. “Jay” Stegmaier brought the Board meeting to order. Matoaca District Supervisor Elswick sat next to Stegmaier, ready to take on the chairmanship fo the second year. Bermuda District Supervisor Dorothy Jaeckle, motioned that Elswick take the job as chair. The next motion allowed Ms.…

The Iceman Cometh

During the night of December 23, 1998, an ice storm now referred to as The Storm, pummeled Chester leaving an astounding amount of damage in its wake. By morning the ice had built up on branches enough to cause their collapse, and when the boughs broke they brought down with them power lines, power poles, phone and cable lines. Chester was disabled. Most had no power; some were without phones and cable did not matter. Pictured above: several trees and branches wiped out power lines on Petersburg Street closing the road for several days. Some 75,000 households were out of…

Plantar Fasciitis

During the course of a normal day, the feet are asked to bear much of the burden of our regular locomotion. We often take our feet for granted until they start hurting. Ideally, the foot is designed to distribute the weight of each step throughout the foot and not just on one particular area. There are many causes of foot pain including alterations in the bones, tendons, ligaments, circulation, and nerves in the foot. Anatomical differences can predispose a foot to excessive strain on its parts as it “gives” under the weight of the body. For example, some people have…

When is the Right Time

0

I am often asked about timing. “Is it too late for, too early for, or when should I….?” These are common but good questions because it means the person is thinking before doing. Most trees, shrubs, and lawn grasses are forgiving when it comes to errant timing of pruning and pest management. An example are azaleas. Azaleas bloom on the current season’s growth. This is often referred to as ‘new wood.’ Pruning after mid-summer will remove next spring blooms but it will not harm the plant. Another example is spraying herbicide on weeds in the lawn when the temperatures are…

VN in Polar Bear Country

Sheila Leckie visited the Town of Churchill in Manitoba, Canada last month. Her love and concern for the extinction of polar bears had drawn her to the town and the Village News tagged along. Churchill is one of the few human settlements where you can come face to face with the mighty polar bear from unique tundra vehicles that let you travel in comfort and safety over the snowy terrain.
