Poo Stations to be Planted Around Chesterfield
0The James River Association has installed 30 pet waste stations throughout City of Richmond parks, the James River Park System and Chesterfield County parks. Funded by a Department of Environmental Quality grant, the intent of this project is to make it convenient for pet owners to clean up after their dogs, thereby improving water quality in the James River. Pet waste contains high levels of bacteria, such as E. coli. When it rains, this bacteria is washed into local waterways and storm drains, ultimately making its way into the James River. Bacteria in waterways can negatively impact wildlife and be…

RE: Jazz Band at Trump Stump
1To the Editor: A letter from Chris Wiegard that appeared in the Village News was recently called to my attention. Wiegard questions using the Maggie Walker Governor’s School Jazz Band to perform at a political event – the appearance of Donald Trump at the Chesterfield County Republican Committee’s fund raiser in the spring. I hope the band was paid. I also hope there were no Mexican students in the band. Trump’s later comments on Mexicans in this country should be shattering to any such student musicians. The Chesterfield County Democratic Committee paid a musician to perform at its June fund…
Blood Thinner
0Proper blood flow through the body’s thousands of miles of arteries and veins is vital to life. On the other hand, the body must also be able to stop blood flow in instances where blood vessels are damaged. This balance of free-flowing and clotting blood can be manipulated medically to treat diseases in the blood system. The process that leads to blood clotting (coagulation) is complex, involving the blood cells, blood vessel walls and many chemicals traveling in the blood stream. There are medical conditions wherein it is desirable to prevent the blood from clotting (anti-coagulation). You may have seen…
Hot Summer Grass Tips
0Don’t guess, soil test is one of the many sayings in the garden industry. If you use the same seed, lime, and fertilizer, you can expect the same results. Successful gardening is like anything else in life: it requires planning and following through. It is late July, and the last thing many of you are thinking about is fall fescue grass lawn renovation. Late July and early August are the best times for having your soil tested. Before you can test, you need to collect a sample. You will need a shovel, a hand trowel and a clean bucket. A…
Monsoons postpone park plantings
0Monsoons and sidewalk construction delayed the yearly landscaping of Chester Park, at the corner of West Hundred and Chester roads. Brad Peebles, who planted the ornamental plants for the Chester Community Association (CCA) yearly project, said it was just too wet to plant until recently. At one time, the corner was taken care of by the Chesterfield Parks and Recreation department that also does landscape maintenance of schools and parks. The CCA took charge of the corner about three years ago. The CCA has been stepping up its area aesthetics program just as it has its entertainment program on Third…
