Built in 1904 and still in operation in 1930 when this photo was taken, the rail crossing at Centralia Road and CSX (Seaboard Railroad) was a local rail stop. The double tracks were convenient to keep the trains on time. A gas station and general store was located adjacent to the store. Centralia was quite a village at the time. Several grand houses aligned the road on its way to Chesterfield Courthouse. Those who had business to do at the courthouse would take the train to Centralia and then travel by carriage or horse to the Courthouse.

CHESTERFIELD — Motorists should expect increased traffic in the area around the Amazon Fulfillment Center on Meadowville Technology Parkway beginning Sunday, and continuing through the holiday season. The traffic pattern will be similar to last year and motorists should allow extra time to get through the area during shift changes. The business will begin its peak season staffing ramp-up on Sunday, and traffic will increase as the workforce increases. Chesterfield County’s Transportation Department is working closely with the police department and Amazon to mitigate the impact on traffic. The Petersburg District of the Virginia Conference, African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Zion Church ,welcomes the Rev. T. Kenneth Venable and his wife, Gene, back to the area as Presiding Elder and First Lady. He will serve under the leadership of Bishop W. Darin Moore, Presiding Prelate of Mid Atlantic Episcopal District. Venable is a native of Baltimore, and a graduate of Morgan State University. He is no stranger to the Petersburg community. Dr. Joseph P. Casey, County Administrator, spoke at the regular meeting of the Woman’s Club of Chester on Nov. 7. He was introduced by Sarah Snead, Deputy County Supervisor for Human Services and Dorothy Jaeckle, our Bermuda District Supervisor. Since November is Cultural Arts Awareness Month, Dr. Casey focused on the importance of the new Baxter Perkins Center for the Arts which will break ground very soon. This project has been the pet project for Betty Matthews for many years.

The Chesterfield-Colonial Heights 2016 Christmas Mother, Debbie Koller, hosted the 9th annual auction last Saturday at the Cultural Center of India. 350 tickets were sold for this fabulous night of bidding. Over $48,000 was raised to ensure families in need in our community experience the magic of Christmas. Bonnie Cauthorn shared her design talent to create a beautiful, festive décor. Celebrity, Wayne Covil, served as the auctioneer. There were a great variety of items donated for the live and silent auctions by many generous businesses and individuals. During the warmest days of 2016 (June 28 – August 5), Chesterfield County conducted a quality of life survey called the Blueprint Chesterfield. The highpoints of the public service portion of the survey highlighted every aspect of what police Corp. George Fisher has done on the Jefferson Davis Highway corridor. When choosing the fall musical for the current school year, the theater students at Thomas Dale High School’s Specialty Center for the Arts expressed their desire to see more diversity on stage. As a result, the drama instructors went with “The Wiz,” an urban reimagining of L. Frank Baum’s 1900 children’s novel, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” and a musical they had done once before in the 80s.the scarecrow is played by Kyler Roundtree. Kaitlyn Ward is your typical nine-year-old in the fifth grade at Curtis Elementary. She is obsessed with dance and has been since she was 18 months old, says her mother Kristin Ward. “She loves dance with such a passion that you can’t help but keep your eyes on her,” said Ward. Kaitlyn is being trained at Tip Tap Toes by Maggie Floyd in Chester. ”Maggie has brought out the very best in Kaitlyn,” Kristin said.
