Shameless Thieves

To the Editor:
I got a call from my sister last Wednesday who was at Sunset Memorial Park with a friend. She went to my husband’s grave and his bronze vase plus flowers were gone. I called the office and told the man what happened. He got the info and would contact police to make a report and said someone would call me from the office. I got a call about an hour later and was told to replace the vase would cost $300 to $400, but I could get it for $193. This person who stole the vase has upset me and caused me a lot of sleepless nights. I hope this person gets caught; they have no respect for the dead. Why should I pay for vase that may get stolen again in the near future. The office has insurance against vandalism which was no reply. I rode up there to the grave and was shocked to see at least 15 or more vases gone. Can you imagine how loved ones felt when they saw the bronze vases gone. The person who took them must need money in a bad way.

I had the same problem at Sunset Memorial. Someone stole the vase from my grandparents grave. I went to the office and spoke with a young lady who actually got in her vehicle and followed me to the grave site and wrote down the information. Another month went by and I called and spoke with someone else. After several more calls I was informed that I could purchase a replacement for $193.00. No explanation as to why the sudden theft since my grandparents had been buried in Sunset for more than 35 yrs. I believe there was construction and the opening up of a new section and wondered if this allowed easy access. She further explained they were not responsible and it was in our contract. I asked for a copy of the 35 – 40 yr old contract and was told the company had been sold. I asked that they have someone contact me. It’s been several months and nothing has been done and no one has contacted me. Sad that people would have no qualms about stealing from the dead, but also I find it unacceptable the way Sunset has handled this. I was told there had been many thefts and the families just purchased new ones. I don’t find this acceptable. Not good customer service and certainly sad for the families.
