A campaign to raise money for children’s books for local libraries is underway. Friends of the Chesterfield Public Library call this the “signature” part of the association’s 50th anniversary celebration.

“There is the need for the county’s public libraries to replenish the high-in-demand but very worn collections,” said Kathryn Helen Geranios, campaign chairman.

“During 2020, picture books have become the second most in-demand for the Chesterfield County Public Library systemwide,” she said. “The dedicated librarians are attempting to accommodate the requests from ten library branches; this task is especially demanding during Covid-12 with some public libraries still closed to the public. With a look to the future, there is a need to replace the very worn collection and replace it with newer editions of perennial favorites as well as titles that show the diversity and cultural sensitivity of our growing county. No matter the vastness of change, children still delight in holding picture books and turning those magical pages.”

For many children, picture books offer a boost in early literacy, enjoyment, curiosity, imagination, comfort and a glimpse of the world beyond themselves, especially in our presently largely shuttered society due to health precautions. In many ways, picture books can set the minds of children free.

“As can be seen by our website, we are not just another library friends group. This is not just a pretty want; it is a dire need,” Geranios said. “Giving towards a picture book would be a wonderful gift to grow the collections at the Chesterfield County Public Library.”

The Friends of the Chesterfield County Public Library is asking the community to donate with the goal of adding at least 1,000 picture books to the collections.

For every $20 raised, a picture book will be in the hands of young children in Chesterfield County to benefit families, libraries and communities; they consider this an investment to be far-reaching for early literacy education as well as for life-long learning. There is even an opportunity for a dedicated book plate for an additional $6, as can be seen in the website.

“No matter where the young readers go– as adults, the memories of picture books will go with them,” Geranois said.” Picture books are books written for young children that rely heavily on pictures to tell the story but can include words as well. Examples include The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats, Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown, and Dr. Seuss books. Please help by giving what you can! When giving, ask yourself, ‘What children’s picture books do you and your family love?’”
