A campaign to raise money for children’s books for local libraries is underway. Friends of the Chesterfield Public Library call this the “signature” part of the association’s 50th anniversary celebration. “There is the need for the county’s public libraries to replenish the high-in-demand but very worn collections,” said Kathryn Helen Geranios, campaign chairman. “During 2020, picture books have become the second most in-demand for the Chesterfield County Public Library systemwide,” she said. “The dedicated librarians are attempting to accommodate the requests from ten library branches; this task is especially demanding during Covid-12 with some public libraries still closed to the…

Chesterfield County Public Library is donating fabric masks to a women’s shelter and 3-D-printed plastic straps for masks to Chippenham Hospital. Library staff made 75 masks and 100 plastic straps using the library’s sewing machines and 3-D printers. The plastic straps are designed to attach to a mask’s elastic ear loops, which relieves the pressure from the wearer’s ears. Library staff are making approximately 100 additional masks to donate to a doctor’s office and a local company. Recently, the library donated 20 fabric masks to a Chesterfield County company.

Trying to help avert a “summer slide” was the driving force behind last week’s first-ever Summer Reading Palooza. The event, which was organized by three librarians at Carver Middle School, drew students from 13 local schools. Stephanie Stargardt, head librarian at Carver, said the event was organized to get “our feeder pattern schools together … to celebrate literacy and promote our summer reading programs.” Students played games, and three authors donated signed copies of their books, she said. The Chesterfield County Public Library sent two staffers to support the event, Stargardt said. She added that the Chester and Enon libraries…

Helping teens develop leadership skills was one of the ideas behind the Chesterfield County Public Library’s mini-leadership conferences. The fourth annual three-day conference – officially known as the Teen Leadership Institute – was held at the Chester Library last week. It featured motivational speaker Charles McLeod. McLeod – who grew up in southern Chesterfield County and graduated from Matoaca High School – was the first black basketball player at Richmond Professional Institute (now Virginia Commonwealth University). He credits his humble beginnings and early years living in public housing, aka “the projects,” for keeping him grounded and giving him the ability…

Spiderman stepped aside so Darth Vader could get through the milling crowd. At the check-out desk of the Meadowdale Library, Princess Leia scanned books for patrons. Stormtroopers, super heroes, and all kinds of characters one could imagine wondered about. It was the Meadowdale Library annual Comic Con and the community responded by attending by the hundreds. The event not only gave one the opportunity for “Cosplay,” the art of dressing up as a character from a movie, book or video game, but vendors of many kinds were on hand with items such as graphic novels, comic books, food and more.…
