Joan C. Girone and Lane B. Ramsey were recognized with Lifetime Achievement Awards from Chesterfield County during the county’s Investiture of Elected Officials last month. Joan Girone, an outspoken advocate for regional cooperation, marked a milestone for Chesterfield County when, in 1976, she became the first woman to serve on the Board of Supervisors. She would serve three terms before retiring from the board in 1987, having served as vice chairman from 1976 through 1980. The “State of the County” was the focus last week of a presentation by Chesterfield County Administrator James “Jay” J. L. Stegmaier. At the center of Mr. Stegmaier’s address to the Chesterfield Business Council was Chesterfield’s commitment to being a “First Choice” community. In 2013 a Referendum was approved by voters to either replace or renovate 11 schools and the school administration building. While initially the projects were spread over a nine-year period, the projects now extend only seven years. “Our school projects are remaining the same, the schools in the original CIP (Capital Improvement Program) that were in years 8 and 9 have been moved up to be completed in the 7 year time frame. The Chesterfield County School Board has hired BWP & Associates to conduct a national search for the next superintendent of Chesterfield County Public Schools. BWP & Associates representatives Dr. Kevin Castner and Dr. Wayne Harris attended a recent School Board meeting to discuss the search and selection process. BWP will seek a successor to Dr. Marcus Newsome, who announced in the fall that he would retire at the end of the 2015-16 school year. The Economic Development Authority (EDA) approved the bank loan and associated financing documents that were priced in November. According to Alan Carmody, director of Budget and Management, “The EDA has been very supportive of the project, having now approved the development agreement and all of the real estate agreements as well as the loan. The new Chesterfield School Board will take their oaths of office this month at Chesterfield’s 1917 Courthouse.
