Fees seem to be increasing every year: extracurricular activities, buses for sports teams, class supplies and Chrome Books to name a few. Will you work to lower or eliminate fees for students? JOHN ERBACH (DALE) While I don’t believe it is possible to eliminate fees altogether, we need to be flexible so that all children have the opportunity to participate in these programs. Flexibility means that principals have the discretion to offer payment plans, scaled fees tied to income levels, and fundraising opportunities on a case-by-case basis. In appropriate circumstances, principals may be permitted to waive fees altogether for families that…

Everyone wants to know about property taxes. Would you consider raising property taxes for next year (2016-17)? CLIFF BICKFORD (DALE) Increasing taxes as a way to achieve a balanced budget should always be the last resort.  When you consider that revenue generated from property tax has increased over the prior two budget cycles it would seem that another increase in 2016-2017 would be an inappropriate added burden on county stakeholders. JIM HOLLAND (DALE) I will not support or advocate an increase in the property tax rate.  The bi-annual and  five-year plan do not require an increase in the property tax rate. DOROTHY…

While elected Constitution officers have no opposition in the November 3 election, other candidates that reach a wider constituency are being opposed. (See last week’s Village News) After losing in this year’s June primary, Sen. Steve Martin will not be on the ticket next month. His seat (11th State Senate district) will be pursued by Republican nominee Amanda Chase and Democratic nominee E. “Wayne” Powell. Senator Rosalyn R. Dance, (11th State Senate district) is running unopposed. Independent Joseph D. Morrissey, dropped out of the race, although his name will continue to be on the ballot. Delegates running for the State…

Where do you live or work? What do you love about this area? What would make this area even better? Thought provoking questions – and literally “close to home” for the citizens who took the opportunity to provide answers at a workshop designed to receive their help charting the future of their community. On the afternoon of October 13, the Chesterfield Planning Department hosted a workshop at the Bensley Community Center for citizens interested in the Northern Jefferson Davis Corridor Special Area Plan. About 30 citizens attended the workshop and provided input on how to improve their community as a…

The Bike & Trail plan was considered this week by the Chesterfield Planning Commission. There are currently 40 miles of bikeways and trails on the ground today, with an additional eight miles of projects currently underway and 28 miles would be added to the network over the next 10 years (figures according to the draft plan). The Board of Supervisors will be holding a series of community meetings before their public hearing scheduled for November 18 starting at 6:30 p.m. to ascertain that citizen are on board with the project while getting additional input. BIKE, TRAIL MEETING DATES Tuesday, October…

In the redistricting process do you suggest community/school meetings for comments on drawing proposed district lines and work to eliminate financial segregation? JOHN ERBACH (DALE) Absolutely—I plan to hold community meetings at every school in the Dale District ahead of any decision on redistricting. This is an emotional issue for many since people feel a sense of attachment to their school. The School Board has hired an outside consultant to prepare an independent report on the subject, and I think that was the appropriate thing to do at this time. I suspect that the report will propose district lines that make…

Do you believe user fees for service, in the county, should continue as they are presently? i.e.: library programs, transfer station, vehicle, library and transfer station closures and so on. CLIFF BICKFORD (DALE) Chesterfield County has utilized User Fees for years as a way to keep real estate taxes lower.  I believe that this pay as you go approach to certain government services that are only used by a portion of the community is appropriate. JIM HOLLAND (DALE) I am committed to reviewing and eliminating nominal fees on a case-by-case basis. Excellence in government means evaluating our revenues and costs at least annually and…

Washington politicians do not have to listen to constituents. Virginia politicians stay out of site on off election years, but local county supervisors make decisions that matter to you immediately. They can be convinced by their constituents on how to vote, and you can reach them by phone and actually talk to them, not an aid. But you have to vote, you have to know the issues, and you have to vote. Supervisors and School Board members are elected every four years so you may want to do a little homework and find out how they stand on the issues.…
