Students set off at the beginning of Saturday’s 5K race. Sergio Perez won the race. More than 400 people competed in the Run the Rocks 5K on Saturday at Elizabeth Scott Elementary School. Carrie Coyner, a former Parent Teacher Association president at the school, organized the event the previous five years, but this year handed the reins to Rebecca Hall. Volunteers help clean up the banks of the Appomattox River each spring. Friends of the Lower Appomattox River is hosting its annual Spring River Clean-up Day from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 30. Pick a site and come on out! Help restore healthy shorelines by removing litter, debris and trash from local lands along the Appomattox River at sites in Colonial Heights, Dinwiddie, Hopewell and Petersburg. In today’s society, self-defense may be crucial. “Self-defense is extremely important, not just for the mind, but for the body as well,” said Doug Taylor, one of the head instructors at Dong’s Karate in Chester. Self-defense includes physical and mental preparation, he said during a Feb. 8 self-defense class. During the seminar, participants learned the value of self-defense, being aware of their surroundings and how to defend themselves. “People are busy.
