The Chesterfield County Fairgrounds will be the site of a Fourth of July event this year from 5-9 p.m., and Fort Lee will host a musical event starting at 5:15 p.m. with fireworks to begin at 9:35 p.m. The fairgrounds, located at 10300 Courthouse Road across from L.C. Bird High School, will have a spectacular fireworks display at dusk. The event includes an activity area for children, food vendors and special entertainment. Lauren Smith grew up on a farm, but when asked to help manage this Chester Farmer’s Market, her response was, “Hell no!” She later changed her mind, explaining that it is because she was already going to be involved with the market. “I just want everybody to be happy,” she said. It was laughs and smiles all around as Stewart and Helen Rex celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary last week. The couple, who were married March 11, 1944, were honored with a vow renewal ceremony at Lucy Corr Health Care Center. The event was a surprise for Stewart, whose humorous comments throughout brought levity to the situation. Stewart, 98, has lived at the Lucy Corr Nursing Home for five years, according to his daughter Darlene Rex-Roberson. Her mother, Helen, 99, still lives with her in Powhatan. The Old Dominion Chapter Modelers are pleased to announce that they will be open for extended hours during the Christmas Season. For four weekends starting Nov. 25 the huge HO model will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays for the viewing pleasure of adults and children. At Henricus Historical Park’s Three Centuries of Virginia Christmas event, Saturday, Dec. 9 from noon to 5 p.m. interpreters will be demonstrating the changing traditions of English Christmas during the reigns of King James I (1621), King George III (1776) and Queen Victoria (1864). From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. that evening, enjoy the James River Advisory Council’s Parade of Lights from the banks of the park. The Chesterfield- Colonial Heights Christmas Mother program hosted a live/silent auction on the evening of Nov. 4 at the Cultural Center of India. Around 320 people were in attendance. The auction was sponsored by a local businessman, and the proceeds go directly to the Christmas Mother program to help children and elders have a better Christmas.
