“Volunteers are caring, sharing, giving, and very hard-working, and we are so very thankful for you and all the wonderful things you do, just grow.” Volunteers for the Shepherd’s Center of Chesterfield were greeted with this statement on their program during an appreciation luncheon last Wednesday. During the welcoming, Executive Director Susan McCammon applauded the volunteers and expressed the center’s appreciation for service completed during the past year. The 279 volunteers (not all in attendance for the luncheon) supported the 668 clients enrolled in the program. Three former Thomas Dale High School students, and recent college graduates visited Washington in March. Andrias White (George Mason University), Maryann Chan and Greg Gallop II (both University of Virginia graduates) saw city landmarks, heard motivational speeches and received sage advice. Their itinerary included tours of the U.S. Capitol and the National Museum of African American History and Culture.  They also attended a presentation by Sgt. Larry Halley bought his first sports car 52 years ago, a 1953 Chevrolet Corvette (C1). He paid $650 for it and drove it until 1982. After sitting for 30 years, he and his son Larry Jr. decided to restore the car back to its original form. After a five-year restoration project, the father and son drove the car 13 miles, the most ever since restoration, to the Corvette Club of Richmond 21st Annual Roundup, hosted by a club Halley Sr. helped start 51 years ago. Holmes of Prince George sang “Me and Mrs. Jones” – a 1972 soul song written by Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff, and Cary Gilbert, and originally recorded by Billy Paul – and their performance led the judges for the 7th Annual Senior Idol competition to award them the top prize. The Chesterfield County Planning Department will host a meeting May 10, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., for citizens to learn about the Northern Jefferson Davis Special Area Plan and comment on the draft of the plan. The workshop-style meeting, to be held at the Bensley Community Building, 2900 Drewry’s Bluff Road, will offer stations on major parts of the plan. The Kiwanis Club of Chester is having its annual Chester 5K & 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk May 6. The run is presented in conjunction with Thomas Dale High School and the Chester YMCA and Kiwanis Club member, Duane Wittman, discussed the partnership. “We were sitting there one day and one of the guys came up and said, ‘Thomas Dale wants to talk to us about what they’re doing in a wellness program,’” Wittman said. “I think most of the schools now have a wellness program [where they work] with the kids in terms of nutrition and obesity [so] that’s how…

              Buckskin, muskets, a colonial- style militia from Henricus, historical interpreters and a Native American drum group offered a walk back into history at the annual Falling Creek Ironworks Event Saturday. Visitors to the park located at 6370 Jefferson Davis Highway found a variety of vendors and displays, along with period history demonstrations. In addition to the colonial history, Native Americans were on hand to demonstrate native culture. Spring into music as the Chesterfield County Public Library in partnership with Chesterfield Arts Foundation offers family-friendly concerts and educational music programs Saturdays from April 22 to June 17 at Chester, Enon, Ettrick-Matoaca, and Meadowdale libraries. The concert series is a preliminary preview of the entertainment options available for the future Baxter Perkinson Chesterfield Arts Center planned for construction in the next 12 months.
